Chalk Point Generation Station, located in Aquasco, Maryland, is a major power generation facility with a total capacity of approximately 1618 MW. Opportunity Summary
The Safety Manager role presents a pivotal opportunity to enhance workplace safety by developing and overseeing comprehensive safety programs aligned with OSHA regulations. This position involves coordinating safety training, conducting regular inspections, and fostering a culture of safety excellence across all levels of staff. By effectively managing emergency response plans and collaborating with regulatory agencies, the Safety Manager ensures a proactive approach to incident prevention and compliance, ultimately contributing to a safer work environment.
Primary Duties
Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive safety programs, policies, and procedures aligned with OSHA and other relevant regulations. Coordinate and deliver safety training for employees, contractors, and visitors, ensuring a thorough understanding of safety protocols. Facilitate regular safety meetings and orientations to enhance safety awareness across all staff levels. Respond promptly to incidents, injuries, and near misses, ensuring immediate safety measures are in place. Investigate accidents and incidents to identify root causes, documenting findings and recommending corrective actions. Maintain accurate records of incidents, follow up on the implementation of corrective measures, and track progress over time. Stay informed about OSHA regulations to ensure compliance throughout the plant. Act as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, facilitating inspections and audits. Manage safety-related documentation including compliance reports, training records, and ensure policies, procedures, and manuals are accessible and clear. Conduct routine safety inspections to identify hazards and ensure adherence to safety protocols. Perform housekeeping inspections, addressing potential hazards, and promoting a clean work environment. Audit facilities, equipment, and processes for compliance with safety standards. Develop and maintain comprehensive emergency response plans for various potential scenarios. Provide expertise and support during emergencies, including accidents, safety incidents, fires, and spills. Coordinate emergency drills and training to ensure workforce preparedness. Collaborate with department managers to integrate safety considerations into daily operations and projects, and implement corrective actions based on analysis findings. Foster a culture of safety excellence through effective communication, training initiatives, and recognition programs. Participate in safety committees and forums to promote awareness and continuous improvement in safety practices. Maintain up-to-date safety data sheets and oversee regulatory-mandated training records. Conduct job hazard analyses and risk assessments for new processes, equipment, and facilities to proactively identify potential risks. Monitor and implement updates regarding new safety regulations and industry best practices for continuous improvement. Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for safety performance and prepare and present safety reports to senior management, highlighting trends, incidents, and opportunities for improvement. Conduct trend analyses of safety incidents to identify recurring issues and develop prevention strategies. Develop strategies for crisis communication during safety incidents, ensuring accurate information dissemination. Support Regular Safety Meetings (at least monthly). Address Safety at all group meetings. Conduct Inspections and Observations: establish within the department a regular inspection of the work area and a safety observation process of work being performed. Establish and lead these activities following any rules, requirements or guidance established in your business unit, group, or division. Involve all NAES teammates in the activities. Write work orders, train, and educate to eliminate hazards, at-risk behavior and meet company regulatory requirements. Conduct Regular Observation Tours: Verify that employees and contractors are performing the work in accordance with safe practices, company procedures and OSHA regulations. Regular and Frequent Contacts: conduct one-on-one contact sessions with workers to discuss safety issues, communicate expectations and coach safe behaviors, e.g., whether the employee is wearing all required personal protective equipment. Respond to Incidents: Respond to all safety-related incidents including, but not limited to injuries, incidents and near misses; write a report that explains what happened, identify the cause, and recommend corrective action following any established business unit or division practice. Follow up as necessary to ensure that corrective action is taken.Working Relationships
Report to the Plant Manager and coordinate with all plant personnel, providing direction specific to assigned areas.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Power plant environment. Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, hearing protection, chemical suits, fire resistant clothing, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
Regular workdays are from Monday to Friday, within standard dayshift hours. However, the position may necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts may also be necessary as part of the role. Some travel may be involved to participate in Manager, Owner, User Group, or other offsite meetings.
Compensation
Initial starting compensation will range from $115,000 to $140,000 and will include an annual performance bonus.
Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field; advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., CSP, CIH) preferred. In-depth advanced knowledge of safety management practices and principles, along with substantial hands-on experience in industrial or power plant environments. Strong understanding of OSHA regulations, safety standards, and compliance requirements relevant to the industry. Proven ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs for diverse audiences, including employees and contractors. Proficient in conducting incident investigations, hazard analyses, and risk assessments to identify root causes and implement corrective actions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with all levels of personnel and regulatory agencies. Demonstrated leadership skills, with a track record of promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement within an organization.
