The Opportunity
The Environmental, Health & Safety Manager will be responsible for helping to lead, motivate and foster a safety-conscious culture in the workplace to reduce accidents and injuries. You will promote the continuous improvement of facility safety systems to reduce risk and the number of accidents and illness, the assurance of EHS regulatory compliance, and to make safe behaviors part of day-to-day thinking. You will coordinate and manage the activities related to meeting all the safety and environmental standards established by applicable regulations, as well as policies and procedures established internally. This key role will lead in the development, deployment and continuous improvement of programs and systems that support environmental, health and safety excellence.
This position is located onsite at the Mesquite, TX Corrugated Packaging facility.
How you will impact Smurfit WestRock
Provide support to the development, implementation, and management of safety programs (LOTO, Hazard Communication, Emergency Response, Fall Protection, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, etc.) to ensure compliance with OSHA and applicable environmental standards.Manage and maintain site specific internal safety systems and reporting tools. Ensure appropriate countermeasures are properly identified to prevent recurrence utilizing a robust incident investigation process including HOP investigations.Conduct internal safety audits to ensure regulatory compliance. Work with site leadership team to ensure all key safety operational controls are in place and safety action items and work orders are resolved on a timely basis.Integrate and partner with the safety and environmental teams and business leaders to promote a proactive safety and environmental culture focused on incident prevention and regulatory compliance.Partner with safety and environmental teams to develop and organize safety engagement and environmental activities to include celebrating accomplishments. Develop specific safety and environmental excellence objectives and create actions plans to meet those objectives.Ensure timely submittal of all regulatory environmental testing, training, and required permit reports to maintain compliance with all environmental standards. Develop safety and environmental training plans for personal and professional development of managers and employees.Model and promote an organizational culture that fosters safe practices and continuous improvement through effective leadership and training.You will also play a critical role in the following:Implementing the company’s Environmental and Safety Excellence programsActively managing the facility’s environmental and safety task calendarUnderstanding and managing site environmental permits and plansParticipating in corporate environmental and safety auditsPreparing required agency submissions and other reportsLeading the facility’s environmental and safety teamsActing as a liaison with environmental and safety agencies like OSHAManaging required environmental sampling eventsCoordinating with the corporate EHS departmentParticipating in the review of new chemicalsConducting site safety and environmental awareness and regulatory trainingConducting site safety and environmental inspectionsKeeping local and corporate management informed of safety and environmental issuesLeading safety and environmental initiatives and continual improvement projectsMaintaining the facility’s environmental and safety files and recordsManaging waste disposal activitiesReporting and coordinating on-site responses to safety and environmental incidentsAssessing operational changes to identify and plan for EHS program impacts
What you need to succeed:
Bachelor’s degree is preferred in Safety, Environmental Science, or Engineering.2 years of experience managing EHS in an industrial setting.Strong aptitude for organization, prioritization and managing multiple tasks at the same time.Ability to actively participate in team-oriented processes to influence team engagement and to drive team decision making to conclusions/solutions.Must be able to demonstrate a commitment to safety in a high speed/high volume environment Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage and inspire others to comply with safety policies and standardsThorough knowledge of safety standards and methodologiesProven track record of critical thinking and problem-solvingDemonstrate thorough knowledge of environmental and safety regulations, including OSHA, EPA, local and state environmental regulations, ANSI, and NFPAGovernment or professional training and compliance courses (e.g. OSHA 30-hour training) preferredAbility to use professional judgment to make quick decisions in highly stressful and time critical situations
