Job Description
The Safety Specialist is a highly visible role which actively promotes and maintains a safe working environment by conducting workplace inspections, investigating safety incidents, developing and implementing safety training programs. The Specialist is part of a dynamic Environmental, Health, Safety & Security Team reporting to the Occupational Process Safety Manager.
The Specialist ensures compliance with internal/ external safety regulations and advises management on risk mitigation strategies to prevent injuries and promote employee health and wellbeing.
The Safety Specialist is on-site in Curtis Bay, Baltimore, MD
Responsibilities Leads, develops and implements safety processes, programs and guidelines ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as Grace corporate requirements. Reviews plans, workmanship, construction plans to ensure compliance with corporate and plant procedures. Coordinates contractor inspection and repair work for all fire prevention systems. Leads and/or participates in PSSRs, RCCAs, and JSAs ensuring continuous improvement. Conducts safety violation, incident or unsafe work practice investigations. Facilitates and conducts safety training including instructor led training for mandated topics to site personnel, contractors and visitors Vendor management, including Cintas for Uniforms, Mats and Boots Work with Fastenal for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Assign and maintain locker assignments Develops and leads and/or assists with safety management systems Monthly Safety Meeting Guide Critical Life Safety and Safe Work Permit Training and Administration Maintain safety shower and eyewash stations Gas Detection Equipment Management Fall Protection Equipment Inspection Fire Protection System Serves as Radiation Safety Officer, after mandatory training Required Qualifications Highschool diploma or equivalent 5+ years of experience in safety, training and industrial hygiene or related operational/maintenance experience in a manufacturing setting. Strong demonstrable knowledge of applicable regulations (OSHA, NFPA, etc). Availability for on-call and after-hours work High level of personal motivation, with a drive for ownership and accountability in performance of job responsibilities. Physical Requirements and Environment Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, Level A suit, full face respirator Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders over 100 ft. Ability to work in a high hazard environment, including adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and noisy surroundings. Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant facility with highly hazardous materials Preferred Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Safety/Industrial Hygiene or other technical discipline or equivalent safety experience in a manufacturing environment. 5+ years progressively responsible experience in safety, training and industrial hygiene or related operational/maintenance experience in a manufacturing setting Demonstrated experience using computer applications such as MS Office and other specialized support systems Experience working with regulatory compliance in a manufacturing and laboratory setting. Demonstrated experience providing consultation and advice to a diverse audience effectively.
