Sales and Use Tax Supervisor
Sales and Use ​Tax Supervisor   ABOUT YOU: This role has overall responsibility for the Jostens Sales Tax function, including oversight of sales tax and certain other regulatory compliance services, and supervision of internal and/or external sales tax support staff. The incumbent is responsible for investigating and resolving a wide variety of sales tax questions as they arise in the course of business, as well as determining Jostens’ sales tax positions in relation to sales tax rules and regulations. The incumbent implements and manages the Vertex O Sales Tax Software system and processes changes for new product offerings and channels, regulatory and legal changes and other adaptations to changing business and regulatory environments.  The role also includes the management of sales tax audits when Jostens is subject to examination by a state revenue authority. In addition, the role is responsible for internal invoice testing for new products and annual changes, maintaining a large exemption database, and collaborating with internal and external customers.   YOU HAVE: Passion. Ability to research and make decisions independently. Technical skills. Familiarity with sales tax fundamentals including nexus, exemption/resale certificates, and manufacturing exemptions. Interest/ability to understand and be comfortable working with accounting systems. Attention to detail. Strong multi-tasking and prioritizing skills. Great communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate sales tax advice in both verbal and written form. Experience. 5 years sales and  use tax compliance experience. Education. Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Tax, Accounting, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred. Experience with Oracle and Vertex O software.  YOU WILL: Manage Sales Tax. Manage the outside service provider and review internal support staff reporting related to sales tax and business license compliance. Manage collaboration with internal and external support staff regarding notices received from taxing jurisdictions, sales tax data, compliance questions, registration questions, and the like. Review and approve all funding related to sales tax payments to respective taxing authorities. Review reconciliation of all payments related to the sales tax GL accounts, and review work done to seek refunds where appropriate. Act as direct contact and top management of all sales tax audits (including GST/QST audits), business license audits, and refund claims. Review data gathered by sales tax staff in response to information requests made by auditors.  Manage the implementation of company-wide changes resulting from any examination findings. Manage customer exemptions. Ensure required business/event sales tax license has been secured, oversee review of customer setups and updating through customer mailing.  Review tax staff’s work providing W-9 and Vendor resale forms as requested. Collaborate with IT on matters such as annual testing to validate tax rate and product taxability on all new initiatives and rollouts, report testing/validation, tax approval/ validation, and end to end tax resolution.  Audit district level detail in Oracle to ensure appropriate and legal tax reporting compliance. Act as Subject Matter Expert for Vertex Database. Manage monthly rate update, system maintenance, tax rule setups, product setup/taxability, tax rate discrepancy resolution.  Manage and resolve Independent Sales Rep issues related to invoicing, customer inquiries, and unique state scenarios. Assist reps in setting aggressive yet accurate and legal tax positions for customers and Jostens. Create and implement new initiatives to resolve invoice complexity for reps and external customers. Maintain up to date knowledge and application of current sales tax technical developments. Research product taxability and resolve customer and rep questions regarding product taxability. Review staff preparation and submission of monthly journal entries related to sales tax, computation of the appropriate use tax accruals, the annual sales tax budget, and certify monthly account reconciliations. Manage the use tax accrual process on purchases. Develop employee. Manage one direct report and/or additional loan staff. Duties include weekly communication, assigning/monitoring work, goals/performance feedback, overseeing exemption approval process, overseeing compliance work. Oversee international taxation.  Activities related to the review of the filing of Canadian GST, PST, and QST tax returns; managing Puerto Rico sales tax activities; and approving and paying Puerto Rico Declaration Imports to coordinate product shipment to customers.
