Sanitation Operator
Job Summary

This position is responsible performing routine and repetitive physical work.  Specifically, the position collects recycling, refuse, yard waste, electronics, scrap metal and household hazardous materials in a safe and efficient manner. The sanitary operator supervises sanitary workers, temporary workers, and day laborers to ensure proper service to the community. Work involves considerable responsibility for the operation of collection vehicles and other equipment, including a front-end loader. Employees of this class are responsible for keeping the team moving on schedule. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Crew Supervisor and the Recycling and Refuse Superintendent who, through the Crew Supervisor, assigns routes and reviews work through inspections and investigations of customer requests.

Essential Job Functions

Supervises Sanitation Workers and other team members on collection routes and assigns specific tasks.Regularly operates collection vehicles, and assists in collection of recycling and refuse being loaded or unloaded.Operates a front end loader to push the collected recycling materials into the Gude Consolidation Bin area and load the materials in a tractor trailer for transportation to the City's sorting facility vender.Acts as essential personal in response to snow removal and storm debris removal emergencies.Assembles and distributes recycling and refuse carts to resident customers.Performs routine inspection of collection equipment.Supervises the washing and servicing of collection vehicles and equipment.Informs customers of collection schedules and policies.Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High school degree; and two (2) years of progressively responsible work in refuse collection procedures, practices, and equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications:
Must have a Maryland Commercial Driver's License (CDL) that includes the operation of vehicles with air brakes and all other required attachments (including a medical certificate issued by the Maryland Department of Transportation).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of Maryland traffic laws and regulations applicable to operation of a commercial vehicle.Understanding of the City's waste management policies and protocols, including the materials that are considered recyclable.Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures in operating collection vehicles and equipment.Knowledge of general maintenance of collection vehicles and related equipment.Ability to layout and supervise the work of a small group of workers.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Ability to successfully interact with difficult or disappointed customers.Ability to operate heavy trucks and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with crew supervisors, employees, and the general public contacted in the course of work.Physical strength and ability to perform sustained and heavy manual work under varying working conditions.
