Summary\:
The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Start-Up Business Consultant is responsible for providing consulting and technical assistance to small businesses and entrepreneurs in the following counties\: Philadelphia, Lower Montgomery and Lower Bucks. The Consultant will work directly with business owners and entrepreneurs on new venture creation including business plan development, financial analysis, market research, business management, operations and access to capital.
The Consultant educates small businesses and entrepreneurs on strategies to develop and grow, and should have an excellent understanding of capital formation and lending options for small businesses. The incumbent is responsible for managing a portfolio of clients including follow-up and coordination of all activities on behalf of the client. As part of the SBDC team of professionals, the Consultant will represent the Center at outside meetings and functions, with agencies that assist entrepreneurs and small businesses such as CDCs, banks, government agencies, professional organizations, etc.
The Business Consultant will also provide secondary interface with the Pennsylvania Small Business Development Center (PASBDC) State Directors office. The SBDC Start-Up Business Consultant works under the technical and administrative supervision of the SBDC Director.
Educate and advise clients on how to start and operate successful business ventures through following network consulting policies and procedures.
One-on-one advice and consulting to be provided include\: business plan development, financial analysis and planning; marketing research and assistance; business management and operations; marketing; human resources; legal issues; business disruption services and affordable care act fundamentals. Develop educational materials and present educational programs as appropriate. Outreach to educate clients, partners and stakeholders on SBDC services and impact. Contribute to knowledge creation and dissemination through communicating with peers and participating in network activities.

Communication skills\:
a. Active listening
b. Effective client interviewing using open ended questions
c. Creative problem solving
d. The ability to handle difficult people
Consulting Techniques\:
a. Display knowledge and use of effective consulting and coaching techniques
b. Assist client to set goals within an action plan
c. Understand how to develop a standard consulting session outline that serves as a diagnostic tool for effectively assessing the client
d. Identify consulting tools/resources and how they would be used
e. Understand and demonstrate when team based consulting would be used
f. Understand how to use SBDCNet and Neoserra consulting resources and how to develop effective documentation
g. Demonstrate understanding of identifying high growth/high opportunity clients and how to engage the state/region-wide services available
h. Demonstrate an understanding and awareness of cultural diversity
i. Understand and comply with the Code of Professional Conduct
Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience\: Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Economics or related field and at least four years of related experience in commercial lending, business management or business consulting. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Required Skills & Abilities\:
• Strong knowledge of entrepreneurship, small business management and operations, accounting and financial analysis, commercial lending, marketing, market research, human resource management, financing, legal issues
• Skilled in written and verbal communications, customer service, coaching and consultation, active listening, and dispute resolution
• Ability to form and maintain productive working relationships with clients
• Strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to manage a large client portfolio with multiple projects or deadlines
• Proficiency in standard business software applications
• Ability to use client relationship management (CRM) software to enter data and generate reports
• Ability to work some nights, weekends, and to travel to locations not accessible by public transportation
Preferred\:
• Master’s degree in business management, marketing, accounting, finance, economics, or related field
• Prior experience in the ownership or operations of a small or start-up business

This position is assigned a hybrid work arrangement (on-campus and remote), the duration of this hybrid work arrangement is at the discretion of Temple University and the Department.
