General Summary
Pupil Transportation's goal is to provide dependable, efficient, and safe transportation service. The School Bus Aide performs routine human support work monitoring the conduct of students on school buses and assisting with discipline and safety; does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under direct supervision, within one functional area, and of a routine nature.
Typical starting pay is $19.46 an hour. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a part-time 20-29 hour per week, non-exempt, position and is eligible for pro-rated benefits. Essential Responsibilities and Duties
+ Directs the loading and unloading of students to prevent congestion and unsafe conditions;
+ Rides bus to maintain order among students;
+ Participates in bus safety drills;
+ Assists in maintaining and enforcing discipline and safety regulations;
+ Maintains records, and prepares reports on student behavior;
+ Assists bus operator when necessary;
+ May operate city owned vehicle;
+ Perform related duties as required.
Education, Experience and Skills
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the eighth grade.
Special Requirements:
+ May require driving city vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Some experience in the management of children is desirable.
Skills: Some knowledge of proper conduct of students on school buses. Some skill in making observations and enforcing simple rules and regulations; ability to establish effective relationships with riders such that they obey the rules and remain orderly while on the bus; ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
Physical Conditions & Additional Information
Standard work environment.
Occasional lifting of at least fifty pounds is required. Work is typically performed inside and around the exterior of a bus and employees must also be able to satisfy the following physical requirements: Long periods of sitting; Overhead reaching, bending and stooping, crawling to inspect under buses or bus seats. Must have the physical ability to descend from or climb up to at least 3.5 feet, at the emergency door, to assist in the evacuation of the passengers. Ability to secure a wheelchair safely on the bus. Contact with Transportation Supervisor, drivers, and passengers. Contact with various administrators, and the general public. Occasional meetings with administrators and/or parents and patrons.

3. RETIREMENT: The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS. There are certain provisions that must be met and the portability request must be executed within 18 months of vesting in the City's Plan.

+ A Defined Benefit Pension plan pays a monthly benefit in retirement using a defined formula based on the employee's earnings history, tenure of service, and age. Our plan has a 5 year vesting period and an employee contribution of 5% of salary.
+ A Defined Contribution 401a plan in which fixed contributions are paid into an individual's account by the employer, the contributions are invested, returns (positive or negative) are credited to the account, and the account balance is used to provide retirement benefits. The vesting schedule for our 401a plan is 33% after one year of service, 67% after two years of service, and 100% after three years of service. There is no required contribution from salary. (Note that: the Defined Contribution retirement plan is the only plan available for Library employees)
