We seek applicants who are dedicated to servingThe University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’sstudent body as an Open Rank (Assistant Professor- tenure track/ Assistant Professor of Practice – non-tenure) at the School of Art & Design beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year.
This open-ranked position is scheduled to begin September 1, 2025, for a graphic design educator and researcher to help lead our large (increasing enrollments) and already successful area into an even more promising future, by keeping pace with an ever-changing industry.
Minimum Qualifications
Assistant Professor rank:
Minimum Qualifications:
Terminal degree ( MFA , Ph.D.) required in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or related fields, such as Interaction Design, UX Design, or Interface Media/Web Design as a tenure-track faculty member.August 1, 2025, deadline for degree completion.
Assistant Professor of Practice rank:
Minimum Qualifications:
MS required Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or related fields as an Assistant Professor of Practice.
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
Assistant Professor rank:
+ A record of two or more years of successful university teaching experience in graphic design/visual communication, beyond the role of graduate teaching assistant is preferred.
+ A record of professional activity and/or scholarly/creative research that demonstrates an emerging national representation in the field of visual communication design (graphic design) is paramount. Candidates will continue professional research that is relevant to the current and future practice of graphic design/visual communication.
Assistant Professor of Practice rank:
+ A record of two or more years of successful university teaching experience in graphic design/visual communication.
+ Record of professional activity and/or research that demonstrates established and emerging national recognition.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program ( ORP ) instead of TRS , subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
