Scientific Diving Coordinator
The primary purpose of the position is to instruct and supervise students enrolled in School of Marine Sciences academic diving courses (SMS 124 and SMS 324). This position also includes overseeing the maintenance of instructional scuba gear and a compressor for filling air cylinders. This position is based primarily at the Darling Marine Center in Walpole, ME, and is field intensive. The job does include some travel to Orono. Typical hiring salary for this part-time position is $31,827 commensurate with qualifications and experience. Qualifications: Required: + Typically has the education associated with a bachelor’s degree and at least two years of relevant professional experience. + Current AAUS/UMaine Diving Medical Exam. + Current certification as CPR/FA/O2 Instructor. + Current status as an AAUS Scientific Diving Instructor or achieved within 6 months of hire. + Current status as an effective, active, and insured Instructor (PADI or SDI preferred) + Valid Maine driver’s license and be eligible to be authorized and approved as a university driver based on the Driver Administration Policy. + Knowledge of scientific diving regulations, skills, and techniques. + Ability to follow strict safety guidelines and detailed work instructions. + Must be able to take initiative and operate independently. + Must possess desire and motivation to exhibit role-model behavior and serve as a mentor to student divers. + Must provide all personal diving equipment. Preferred: + Graduate degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience + Experience with scientific diving instruction. + Experience preparing and maintaining dive equipment. + Cold water diving with heavy current and low visibility diving experience.
