Scientific Leader, Drug Product mRNA CoE and Early Development
Scientific Leader, Drug Product mRNA CoE and Early Development A career in Boston – main video (youtube.com) At GSK, we have bold ambitions for patients, aiming to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people by the end of the decade. R&D is committed to discovering and delivering transformational vaccines and medicines to prevent and change the course of disease. We believe the Greater Boston area is an important hub for the biotech and pharma industry, which is why we’ve invested in growing our footprint and expanding our R&D space in Cambridge, with a primary focus on additional state-of-the-art lab space. Here, we will bring together talent and expertise, building upon GSK’s long history of vaccine development, to create globally leading viral capabilities and cutting-edge vaccines technologies, as we add to our robust portfolio targeting infectious diseases at every stage of life. In the plan to create a new hub for mRNA-based vaccines in Cambridge, we are building new laboratories that will be focused on mRNA state-of-the-art platforms that will enable the discovery and early development of new products including deep product understanding, novel delivery systems and advanced characterization at preclinical as well as clinical stages, supporting the introduction of new mRNA-based vaccines. Drug Product R&D is one of the core functions of the GSK Technical R&D, accountable for the vaccine product and process development from the early onset of discovery projects and platforms to late-stage development, transfer and launch of new vaccines. As part of the TRD global organizational evolution, Drug Product R&D has been re-designed to increase focus and expand capacity and capabilities in novel vaccine technologies such as mRNA. The position of Scientific Leader, DP mRNA CoE and Early Development has been created to lead a team of scientists to discover and introduce new vaccines delivery technologies into Drug Product Development teams at the newly created GSK site in Cambridge, MA. The Scientific Leader will cooperate with expert scientists, scientific leaders and the director to establish a competitive drug product mRNA platform that enables rapid and efficient development of mRNA based candidate vaccines. The incumbent will also ensure that transversal capabilities are available to support the discovery and early development of vaccine candidate across modalities (proteins, glyconjugates, VLPs,…) The Scientific Leader will ensure that adequate characterization tools are in place for a deep molecular understanding of the candidate vaccines and that digital and data science is fully leveraged for drug product design and physical formulation. The Scientific Leader, DP mRNA CoE and Early Development will report to the Director, DP mRNA CoE and Early Development, and will be part of a multidisciplinary team of expert scientists and scientific leaders. The Scientific Leader will need to build strong partnership with other functions in TRD and in the broader R&D (Vaccines and Medicines), with focus on building a trusted relationship with the mRNA CoE and the Viral Scientific Area. Key Responsibilities: Introduce new vaccines formulations and delivery technologies, with primary focus on establishing an mRNA drug product platform Lead a team of 6 or more formulation scientists, to investigate new formulations, delivery technologies and adjuvants at research and early development stages Benchmark disruptive technologies and identify external partners. Create collaborations to introduce new technologies, with the goal of creating robust and efficient products and processes. Scout for advanced analytical tools to appropriately characterize complex DP matrices and delivery systems and leverage technology in the GSK network to apply to vaccines delivery Create performance and development plans for team members which ensure personal growth and promote an efficient, stimulating and innovative working environment.. Communicate effectively within TRD and with external stakeholders to defend scientific and technical decisions and drive strategy at the appropriate technical board. Act as a voice and ambassador of Drug Product R&D at governance bodies/meetings. Represent Drug Product RD, TRD and GSK at external scientific meetings and present research results, when applicable Identify risks for project/platform progression and determine developability including processability for transition to later stage of development. Collaborate with laboratory operations at each site to ensure that team members comply with site EHSS policies. The successful applicant will spend 3-6 months within the first year in Rockville, MD to support and guarantee a smooth transition of methods and know-how to the new laboratories in Cambridge, MA.
