Pay Range

$33.48- $40.99  Hourly for the 502.1level 

$41.93 - $51.33 Hourly for the 502.2 level

Job Description

We have an opening for a Scientific Technician to work in the area of explosives performance testing research. You will provide technical, hands-on support to principal investigators and scientific and technical staff in explosives research and programmatic/experimental activities to address programmatic and research and development needs in energetic materials. This position is in the Explosive Performance Research & Technologies group (ExPRT) within the Energetic Materials & Design (EMD) section of the Materials Science Division (MSD).

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will

Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technical personnel to provide general technical support to various programmatic tasks and explosives research efforts for routine activities.Execute operations with explosives, including detonation calorimetry, explosive part preparation, performance testing, and hazardous waste management and fulfill duties such as room responsibilities for instruments and labs. Acquire basic data on projects involving explosive testing and characterization of explosives and keeps a detailed laboratory notebook.Maintain archive of document procedures, peer reviews, and data.Obtain certification as an LLNL Explosives Handler and routinely work hands-on with energetic materials of all types.Obtain and Maintain Competent Mechanical Worker Qualification.Use mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic, vacuum components and scientific glassware in the assembly of apparatus and equipment.Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 502.2 level

Analyze basic data and prepare data summaries of results on projects involving explosive testing and characterization of explosives.Provide technical support to somewhat unique performance tests.Identify technical problems.Plan and select methodology and procedures to attain desired goals in routine activities. Qualifications Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.Experience working with an experimental team and working effectively under conflicting and rigorous deadlines with general supervision.Demonstrated ability to conduct explosive experiments and support activities with a broad range of experience in experimental support, techniques, and execution including knowledge of safety rules and procedures.Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of and experience with the scientific method and instrumentation in laboratory settings.Ability to become a certified LLNL Explosives Handler and have willingness to work safely with explosives.Developed organizational and interpersonal skills to work with experimental teams and communicate with members from all disciplines. Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting programmatic deadlines and to work in a collaborative research and development environment.Ability to wear a respirator as needed.

Additional qualifications at the 502.2 level

Associate degree in chemistry, materials science, engineering or technology or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience .Experience with basic data analysis and report writing.Experience operating several related instruments or sophisticated scientific equipment in routine activities and perform sophisticated scientific techniques in routine activities.

Position Information

This is a Flexible Term appointment, which is for a definite period not to exceed six years.  If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, Career Indefinite status may be maintained (should funding allow).

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.  If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.

Per the Department of Energy (DOE), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory must meet certain restrictions with the use and/or possession of mobile devices in Limited Areas. Depending on your job duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area where you are not permitted to have a personal and/or laboratory mobile device in your possession.  This includes, but not limited to cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones, and other Bluetooth/wireless enabled devices.
