Catalent Pharma in San Diego, CA is hiring a Scientist 1, Oral Formulation Development. An individual at the level of Scientist 1 will be expected to perform all the duties of an Associate Scientist but with a greater degree of autonomy. In addition, the Scientist 1 must be able to independently plan and execute simple laboratory experiments and will be expected to clearly communicate the status of projects to management and Clients. The Scientist 1 will be developing the use of innovation and creativity in exploring alternative approaches to problem solving. The individual must have basic experience in designing oral formulations, such as solutions, suspensions, capsules, tablets, and amorphous intermediates. Analytical techniques to be introduced may include pH, osmolality, viscosity, particle size, DSC (Differential scanning calorimetry), PXRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), TGA (thermogravimetric), DVS, powder characterization, dissolution, disintegration, spectrophotometry, and chromatography. The individual may be required to assist in the creation and/or revision of company SOPs and will be increasingly sought for training and mentoring of other colleagues. All duties will be performed in compliance with company standard operating procedures (SOPs) and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) regulations, as appropriate.

This is a full-time hourly position: Monday – Friday, 1st shift from 8am-4:30pm on-site.

The Role:

Conduct formulation studies for preclinical or human clinical oral dosage formsSimple experimental design and execution will be performed independently. Complex design may need supervisor assistance. Decisions may impact personal workload and project timelinesData interpretation should be conducted with limited guidance. Individuals will be able to identify key factors from data and understand the importance of the findingsClear and accurate record keeping in laboratory notebooks and some secondary review of other colleague’s work for scientific accuracy and complianceIncrease in client interaction will be a focus. Individuals may lead discussions with clients on technical topics relating to their projectMaintain a high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature. Develop understanding of cGMPs and Catalent SOPs and systems applicable to work performedComply with good housekeeping and safety practices. Individuals may be invited to supervise a laboratory assistantOther duties as assigned

The Candidate:

4-year degree (Bachelor’s/B.S.) in a physical, chemical, biological, or pharmaceutical science is required with at least one of experience in oral/injectable formulation development. Will also accept a Master’s in Science (M.S.) with no experience in oral formulation developmentRequires experience in small or large molecule oral or injectable delivery formulation development to be considered. Preferred experience with suspensions, capsule, and tablet formulation Must be able to effectively communicate with peers and interdepartmental colleagues, demonstrate considerate and safe behaviors in the laboratory, and demonstrate accountability, attention to detail, and organizational skillsPhysical requirements: Individual may be required to sit, stand, walk regularly and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds; ability to communicate orally with customers, vendors, and co-workers. Regular use of telephone and email. Hearing, vision, and speaking within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents. Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computer terminals, calculator, copiers, and fax machines. Good reasoning ability is important. Able to understand and utilize management reports, memos, and other documents to conduct business

Pay:

The anticipated salary range for this role in San Diego, CA is $76,000 - $86,000 annually. The final salary offered to a successful candidate may vary, and will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to: the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, skillset, education, business needs, etc.  Catalent is a multi-state employer, and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.
