Position Summary
As a Scientist 1 within Illumina’s Reagent Science team, you will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to advance sequencing technology and make it more accessible to everyone. You will play an important role in the research and development of reagents used in Illumina’s sequencers with the best-in-class performance, stability and robustness that our customers expect.
With team’s support and supervision, you will be designing and executing experiments using a variety of lab instruments, collecting data, performing analysis, drawing conclusions and presenting to key stakeholders. We are looking for candidates with genuine interest in science and biotechnology, who are eager to learn and can efficiently execute experiments in the lab.
Responsibilities:
Contribute to research and development projects across Illumina NGS platforms in a fast-paced environment.
Manage goals within defined timelines
Under supervision, design and execute experiments using a variety of lab equipment and methods.
Analyze, interpret and summarize large data sets using a variety of tools.
Write reports, present and communicate results and conclusions in written and oral form.
Understand and troubleshoot sequencing data in a timely manner.
Maintain lab notebooks, write technical reports and prepare presentations for technical teams.
Help maintain sequencing instruments, lab equipment, and laboratory supplies.
Requirements:
4-year degree (e.g., BSc) in relevant field such as chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, biochemical engineering or equivalent work experience
Theoretical and practical knowledge of basic biochemistry, chemistry and physics
Formal lab training (academic or industry) and familiarity with basic laboratory equipment and techniques such as pH meters, dilutions, balances, centrifuges. Ability to execute complex protocols. Willingness to learn to operate a variety of new lab instruments.
Basic understanding of statistics, such as statistical significance, replicates, controls
Ability to interpret results and contribute to insight and planning of next steps
Understanding of proper handling of chemicals and biohazard materials
Working knowledge of common programs and applications such as Word and Excel. Willingness to learn new software programs to organize, analyze, and interpret data. Experience with programming is preferred.
Sufficient organizational skills to track, maintain and order lab supplies and equipment
Ability to maintain and organize laboratory notes and data
Comfortable working in a collaborative team and seeking guidance and help
Self-motivated, proactive and willing to learn
Preferred Skills & Experience
A working knowledge of, or background in, Next Generation Sequencing would be advantageous, but it’s not essential
Experienced with nucleic acids and DNA/RNA processing enzymes
Experience with enzyme characterization methods (HPLC, DLS, DSF, Bioanalyzer, Thermal Melt and Chemical Melt)
Strong troubleshooting and optimization experience
· Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 0-2 years of related experience; or equivalent work experience.

The estimated base salary range for the Scientist 1 role based in the United States of America is: $61,700 - $92,500. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data. Additionally, all employees are eligible for one of our variable cash programs (bonus or commission) and eligible roles may receive equity as part of the compensation package.
