Scientist 3, Synthetic Immunity
The Position

The Rutz lab in the Research Oncology department at Genentech is seeking a highly motivated, and creative immunologist for a Scientist 3 role to perform discovery research and contribute to the development of novel drug targets in the area of synthetic immunity.

The Opportunity:

This laboratory-based role involves close collaboration with colleagues and teams across multiple functions including cell therapy, molecular biology, protein engineering, computational sciences, functional genomics, in vivo pharmacology, early clinical development and manufacturing. You will focus on the development of next generation cellular therapies, such as CAR-T and TCR-T, against solid tumor targets.

You will design, implement, and execute experimental approaches to study mechanisms that enhance potency, persistence and safety of cellular therapies.

You will employ state-of-the-art cell and gene editing tools and cellular assays for potency and safety assessment in therapeutically relevant in vitro models, including primary cell- and co-culture systems.

You will apply functional assays and multiomics approaches to enable high throughput phenotypical screens, which will inform the design of next generation T cell therapies

You will work in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment.

You will plan experiments to efficiently work on multiple projects simultaneously while adapting the schedule based on shifting priorities.

You will contribute to internal and external presentations as well as scientific publications.

Who You Are:

PhD in immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry or related field

2+ years experience in an academic or industry laboratory setting

Strong background in T cell immunology and experience studying gene regulation and function in primary immune cells, including practical experience with gene perturbation technologies such as CRISPR KO, CRISPRi and CRISPRa

Familiarity with immunological principles and techniques including primary cell isolation, cell culture and flow cytometry

You have a documented record of professional achievement in the form of impactful publications

Excellent teamwork, communication, management, and organizational skills are required
