Job summary:   

Identifies, assesses and develops new scientific concepts and/or technologies to provide solutions to identified business or customer problems, challenges. Manages scientific technical projects, coordinating with other R&D professionals and support personnel to accomplish objectives. Defines approach to scientific, technical problems, develops hypotheses and research approach. Participates in patent applications. Will provide technical guidance to Technicians, lesser experienced Scientists in setting up and executing experiments, testing.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:   

Applies broad technical capabilities and knowledge to complex R&D problems. Pursues own novel R&D ideas aligned with delivering business impact in addition to assigned programs;Works at the leading edge of research in technical fields critical to one or more businesses, functions or project teams.   Conducts research, develops & delivers R&D programs, objectives based on customer needs, competitive activity, business strategy & research goals aligned with the marketplace that may lead to commercialization of products or improvement of existing products.  Drives hard and recognizes the value of 'failing fast';Networks with customers (internal and external).  Aware of future industry direction;Leads the group in solving process issues and improving system deficiencies via the appropriate techniques.  Identifies barriers impacting freedom to operate and develops strategies to resolve.Represents Greene Tweed technical capability externally at trade shows, industry events, etc.;  Effectively conveys organizational vision and strategies both within and beyond the research team.Facilitates the transfer of technology to other functions within the organization such as manufacturing, engineering, etc.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education/Certifications:  PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related field.

Skills and Experience: 

5 + years of industry experience focusing on polymer or small molecule synthesis, with strong expertise in materials formulation/compounding. Ideally, this should be tied to elastomers, though experience with inks, coatings, or adhesives may also be applicable.Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of business or market needs by authoring research proposals, setting program objectives and milestones and, through research focus, drive and strategies.Strong communications of technical and commercial research & testing results.The ability to coordinate the efforts of a team, group, or individuals in support of a technical project or program.An ability to take ownership and accountability for meeting commitments.Understands proprietary issues and actively seeks opportunities for protecting intellectual property through patents and trade secrecy and non-disclosure agreements.Strong problem-solving and analytical and decision-making skills.The ability specifically to develop a familiarity with appropriate experimental techniques, apparatus and procedures particular to their area of study as specified by the developmental program.
