Scope Program Coordinator
Job Description

General Summary

Under general supervision, oversees daily activities of Sterile Processing Scope Tech staff: preparation, sterilization, storage and distribution of medical/surgical instruments, supplies and equipment in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Ensures that proper decontamination and distribution steps are taken for medical/surgical supplies, instruments and equipment handled by the scope service. Maintains clinical scope equipment utilized throughout Perioperative Services or for services that maintain agreement for such services with Perioperative Services.

 

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the program being overseen and the general nature and level of work being performed by people and the department. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties and oversight performed.

Coordinator will be responsible for oversight and where appropriate performance of functions outlined:

Ensures adherence and administration of UMMC human resources’ policies and procedures:Coordinates the processes for recruitment, selection, orientation, competency validation, professional development and staff recognition as needed.Conducts performance appraisal reviews as needed to effectively address individual and group performance outcomes.Supports staff education and development with team building, problem solving and job enrichment programs.Maintains all personnel records in confidential file and conduct performance reviews, and performance documentation on direct report staff.Oversees inspection, assembly and preparation of instrumentation for terminal sterilization in accordance with established sterile processing practices and standards which includes:Inspects instruments for cleanliness and proper functionality.Assembles instrument trays and sets in accordance with specific requirements.Wraps or packages and labels instrumentation for sterilization, properly, using established, generally accepted techniques.Performs terminal sterilization activities in accordance with established procedures utilizing steam and plasma and related sterilization equipment.Monitors the sterilization process using mechanical, chemical and biological indicators.Records data on items to be sterilized, identifying item, date, sterilizer and load. This may include computer data entry.Complies with safety requirements regarding thermal and chemical exposure and assures that department is compliant with all standards.Coordinates and manages the procurement, maintenance, repair, and distribution of all scopes and appropriate equipment and supplies associated with the scope procedures under the direct supervision of the department manager.Coordinates with Biomedical Engineering for the management, exchange, and distribution of equipment requiring maintenance or repairRotates equipment for routine maintenance.Cleans and restocks specialty equipment and carts as appropriate, in accordance with departmental procedures.Orders and ensures stock of required equipment and supplies necessary for scope proceduresParticipates with the department manager in developing a list of capital needsEnsures proper storage of equipment when not in useWorks in cooperation with the Physicians, OR, STC, and floor coordinators for the distribution of clinical equipmentMay dispense and deliver instruments and equipment to nursing departments and clinics.Maintains an accurate record of supplies, instruments and equipment dispensed to account for use and availability. This includes computer data entry.Conducts supply inventory and follows procedures to restock as necessary.Provides appropriate scope and cart to requested location. Assists physician with proper handling of scope. Provides supplies for procedure as appropriatePerforms and/or assists with decontamination activities, which render supplies clean and safe for handling, in accordance with department standards and generally accepted decontamination practices.Adheres to dress code required for decontamination activities.Uses chemicals in proper dilution for effective cleaning and disinfection.Operates mechanical equipment used in decontamination processes, by following detailed operating instructions.Exercises safe handling practices in handling sharps to prevent personal injury or injury to others.Performs routine cleaning activities to ensure a clean work environment and prevent internal cross-contamination.Ensures preparation and/or assists with preparation of patient care equipment for use and verifies proper function prior to redistribution.Ensures and practices proper techniques in the containment and handling of contaminated instruments, supplies and equipment to prevent cross-contamination, in accordance with department standards and accepted safe and sterile handling practices.Communicates effectively with all customers to render service and to resolve problems. Providing technical support and training for all hospital customers utilizing scope related equipment.Observes appropriate handling and safety standards throughout the entire sterilization process in accordance with governing regulations and UMMS standards.Attends all mandatory hospital and department in-service training and safety training annually.Attends relevant hospital and community training programs to promote professional growth and development.Coordinates the yearly departmental training competencies in regards to scope utilization..Performs related duties, as assigned.

QualificationsHigh School Diploma or equivalent required.Two-year Central Sterile Processing Technician, Surgical Technician, or Endoscopy Technician experience required.Basic knowledge of the use of a PC and computerized database system or demonstrated ability to learn within one year.Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to work with various clinical personnel, resolve problems and to properly identify and label supplies for inventory purposes.Certification in CFER (Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor) requiredCertification in Central Sterile Processing through IAHCSMM required.
