Seamer Mechanic/Machinist

In this crucial role as Seamer Mechanic, you will play a lead role in ensuring the smooth operation and optimal performance of our 60L seaming line. You will be responsible for the pre-season preparation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of our 60L seamers. Your keen eye for detail will be essential in overseeing seam quality and ensuring compliance with strict can manufacturer specifications. Additionally, you will demonstrate your well-rounded mechanical expertise by assisting with repairs and maintenance on various plant equipment, keeping our entire production line running efficiently.   

Essential Functions/Qualifications  

The responsibilities of the position include the following:   

Lead pre-season preparation, repair, and ongoing preventative maintenance of 60L seamers.  Conduct thorough inspections and identify potential issues before they cause downtime.  Utilize specialized tools and gauges to measure, calibrate, and adjust seaming head components to achieve consistent, hermetic seals.  Oversee and document seam quality control procedures, ensuring all seams can meet manufacturer specifications and food safety regulations.  Troubleshoot and diagnose seamer malfunctions, pinpointing root causes and implementing effective repairs.  Perform repairs on 60L seamers using hand and power tools, including replacing worn parts and maintaining a clean and organized workspace.  Assist with repairs and preventative maintenance on other plant equipment as required, demonstrating a willingness to learn and adapt to various mechanical systems.  Collaborate with other technicians and maintenance personnel to diagnose and resolve equipment issues.  Maintain a comprehensive understanding of plant equipment through ongoing learning and participation in training programs.  Uphold all safety protocols and procedures in the plant environment.  Implement strategies to improve uptime and efficiency of the seaming line.  Maintain clear and concise documentation of all maintenance activities, repairs, and replacements on the seamers.  Other duties, as assigned.  Other duties are to ensure the facility and organization is fully supported and successful.

Education and Experience  

Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Seamer Mechanic or related mechanical trade.  Proven experience in repairing and maintaining industrial machinery, preferably within a food processing environment. Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, with experience in troubleshooting and problem-solving.  Previous experience in Seafood or Manufacturing preferred. 

Work Environment and Schedule  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Position requires onsite presence at our Alaska Processing Facility, and the ability to travel, spending a significant amount of time during the season at our various locations and processing facilities in Alaska. 

Physical Demands  

This role is regularly required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. Employees are frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
