Under the direction of the Camp Guernsey Archaeologist, this position will assist in conducting field surveys, site testing, site recordation, site monitoring, archival research , interpretive display creation, report writing, and other work as needed. Work will be performed throughout the approximately 80,000 acres of Camp Guernsey. This is an At-Will Employee Contract position. Human Resources Contact: Molly Skala /molly.skala@wyo.gov ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level + Conduct class III cultural resource inventories for new sites and/or update documentation of existing sites as directed by the Senior Archaeologist. + Analyze and classify artifact assemblages to interpret their composition, age, type, and cultural system represented. + Perform library and archival research, preparing detailed maps of archaeological sites and artifact distributions. + Generate charts, maps, and graphs for publication. + Erect flagging, stakes, or other barriers around cultural resources prior to military training maneuvers. + Monitor ground-disturbing activities and military training maneuvers for impacts on cultural sites. + Assist with completing Wyoming Cultural Resources Property Forms and writing cultural resources report sections as well as updating internal databases. + Assist in the creation of interpretive displays. Qualifications PREFERENCES: Preference will be given to applicants with a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology or a closely related field. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed an accredited archaeology field school. Preference will be given to applicants with archaeological experience on military installations and/or with GIS experience. KNOWLEDGE: + Knowledge of basic archaeological field methodology; site identification, recordation, shovel testing, and excavation. + Knowledge of Wyoming and/or Great Plains archaeology and prehistory. + Knowledge of ESRI GIS products, Google, and Microsoft Office suites. + Skills using a GPS unit. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: None - See "Preferences" Necessary Special Requirements PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: + Requires strenuous physical activity, including long periods of standing, hiking, walking, climbing, squatting, lifting, and carrying heavy objects (e. g. backpack of up to 50 lbs). + Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings and in all types of weather. + Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings where situational awareness is crucial including areas with steep slopes, rocky terrain, and firelines, often with military training activities occurring nearby (e.g. heavy military equipment maneuvers and controlled gunfire). + Documentary research and report writing are expected, which entails sitting, concentrating, and typing for long periods.
