Seasonal Assistant Educator - Babylon, NY
Assist with all programs and projects associated with the Marine Program. Conduct various indoor and outdoor marine educational experiences both on and off the Cedar Beach Marina site. Assistant Educators will be responsible for learning and conducting all outreach programs at other facilities (other camps, libraries, daycares, etc.) This position will have a flexible schedule and may include weekend or early evening hours. This seasonal position will participate as a marine educator for children and adults. The educator will also assist with a marine science summer camp for children ages 6-14, when needed. This will include leading children through various activities both indoors and outdoors, including the classroom/building, salt marsh, beach activities, and arts and crafts. The Assistant Educator may also lead tours at Cedar Beach Marina, Babylon to visiting groups as well as lead courses and labs individually, and prepare and breakdown daily activities and assigned programs. Assistant Educators will be responsible for preparation before programs and clean-up after programs including cleaning and care of the facility, animals, and/or aquaria. All associated tasks related to camp are possible including supervision of children, paperwork and creating and teaching a marine lesson. Required Qualifications: + Attendance in or Graduation from a recognized college/university or equivalent. + 21 years or older. + Experience with working with children. + Ability to learn and lead educational experiences and activities. + Ability to understand and carry out educational program tasks and objectives. + Ability to supervise a group of up to 30 children + Ability to work with children. + Ability to understand and implement written and oral instructions. + Ability to work independently and as part of a team. + Ability to work outdoors performing various types of educational and physical activities. + Ability to learn marine science and natural science subject matter. + Ability to work with and touch live animals (marine organisms, fish, reptiles, etc.). + Ability to handle health and safety issues and/or emergency situations; + Ability to perform physical requirements of job, such as light hiking expeditions to the bay beach seining; off camp trips to the Aquarium and Yankee III voyage. + Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position; + Ability to pass a motor vehicle screening + Valid Driver’s License + Ability to meet acceptable background check standards, if required; + Ability to work flexible hours, as required by ongoing operations, may include nights and weekends, as needed. Preferred Qualifications: + Desire to work with children. + Basic marine biology, environmental or education background/aquarium and/or animal care experience. + Current CPR/AED and/or First Aid certification or higher, or equivalent. + Lifeguard Certifications.
