*_Position Information:_* Title: Forest & Park Supervisor II (Trail Crew) Location: Kenneth Dubuque Memorial State Forest, Hawley Start Date: 5/4/25 End Date: 10/18/25 ** * * *_About the Department of Conservation and Recreation:_* The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. DCR is a dynamic agency, and is one of the largest park systems in the nation. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, trails and parkways. The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for the position of Forest & Park Supervisor II for the Mohawk Complex Trails Crew. The Mohawk Complex Trails Crew monitor, maintains, and provides basic repairs to the extensive 100 mile trail network across 12 park and forest facilities in Franklin and Berkshire Counties. The Forest and Park Supervisor II is the lead supervisor and coordinator of this crew. *_Duties:_* * Schedules and prioritizes task list related to trail needs in the Mohawk Complex. * Leads the maintenance efforts of assigned areas, including such activities as grounds maintenance, trail restoration, light carpentry, and repair and removal of hazardous trees or limbs. * Inspects the condition of state-operated forest and park trails to determine their suitability for public use, ensures compliance with safety standards and determines maintenance needs. * Maintains records and prepares reports concerning assigned work to provide information and make appropriate recommendations. * Conducts trail inventories and other data collection for Mohawk Complex trail system. * Determines supply needs; operates and performs routine maintenance on various types of equipment and vehicles * Provides information to the general public as needed * Interviews candidates for employment. * Monitor the activities of personnel to ensure the maintenance of state forest and park trails for recreational purposes. * Confer with agency personnel concerning assigned unit activities to resolve problems, provide information and make recommendations. * Coordinates the activities and work of volunteers, court-referred individuals, etc. as needed. * Performs related duties as assigned. *_Preferred Qualifications:_* * Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work, assessing the capabilities of employees; conducting periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining training needs; determining the need for disciplinary action and recommending disciplinary action. * Knowledge of the methods and techniques of trail maintenance and repair, including terminology. * Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in forest and park management. * Knowledge of the types and uses of materials and equipment used in forest and park maintenance. * Skill in safe use of hand tools (e.g. hammers, pliers, etc.) and hand-held power tools * Chainsaw certification * Ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities. * Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare general reports. * CPR/First Aid certifications * Ability to communicate in written and oral forms. * Ability to work outdoors in all weather and to hike in and out of work sites each day. * Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others. * Ability to establish rapport with persons from different ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds. * Ability to maintain a calm manner in emergency situations. ** *Please note, if you are selected for this position and will be working less than 90 days, the position will automatically revert to a short-term position.* *Our short-term positions are not part of the salary scale that is advertised within this job posting. Should this position revert to a short-term seasonal position (less than 90 days), your salary rate will be discussed with you during the interview phase of the process.* *First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.* MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the field of forestry, parks or recreational management and ( B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in forestry, natural resources; management or parks and/or recreation management may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.* *Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. NOTE: No substitutions will be permitted for the required (B) experience.
