General description of the intern duties:
Office of the City EngineerInspect construction sites and learn environmental regulations, stormwater quality regulations, and enforcement methods. Accompany inspector on construction sites, assist with office duties.
Houston WaterEngineering support for special projects related to water infrastructure planning and digital transformation.
Transportation & Drainage Operations - Multimodal Safety & Design BranchThe Multimodal Safety & Design Branch with TDO is looking for a transportation engineering or planning intern. Our ideal intern is an individual who is interested in transportation and learning how to develop great streets that are safe for all roadway users. An intern within MSD may assist the team on plan reviews, report reviews, TCP review, design development in CAD software, data tracking and analysis with Excel, data organization and management, map making in ArcGIS, field inspections, and other key branch functions. While working within MSD, the intern will get hands-on experience and a strong understanding of City operations.
Houston Permitting CenterEngineering report review/filing
Capital Projects - Infrastructure Delivery LineData and file management for projects, project data collection and analysis, create standard templates based on information provided, assist creating SOPs for project specific tasks, and etc.
Houston Permitting Center / Office of the City EngineerThe individuals will assist with our right-of-way permits and/or public easement dedication process. We handle multiple permits that require engineering / tech review to process.
Houston Permitting CenterAssist with updating Houston Public Works design and construction standards.
Public Work UtilityAssists engineers in the drinking water treatment plant.
Capital Projects Infrastructure Delivery LineData and file management for projects; project data collection and analysis, assist in creating and updating standard templates, standard letter forms and SOPs.
Infrastructure and Development services Reviewing construction plans for compliance. Review agreements and covenant documents.
Facilities Management & DevelopmentGIS Capabilities to assist with digitizing trails and amenities
Geographic Information SystemAs a GIS intern, undertake tasks such as inputting data, ensuring updates, and handling various functions related to a Geographic Information System (GIS) database.
TransportationThe Transportation Intern will assist in the analysis and planning of transportation projects. Responsibilities include data collection, GIS mapping, and assisting with various project assessments. The intern collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, supports public engagement initiatives, and contributes to the development of transportation plans and policies. This role requires strong communication skills, some proficiency in GIS software, and knowledge of transportation planning principles.
Development ServicesAssist the Planners with regulatory review of development proposals and subdivision plat applications; researches development activity, interacts directly with the public, developers, engineers, architects and other professionals.
Historic PreservationAssist the Historic Planners with technical reviews, research and analyze planning data for activities relating to the Historic Preservation Ordinance.
Community and Regional PlanningAssist Planners by collecting and compiling statistical and graphical information from broad and varied sources. Works with residents, community stakeholders and community on basic planning programs.

Houston WaterEnrolled in an engineering or related science curriculum at a recognized institution of higher education. Previous experience with GIS, Excel, Power BI, or computer programing language is highly preferred.
Transportation & Drainage Operations - Multimodal Safety & Design BranchIdeally, we are looking for an individual pursuing a degree in Civil (Transportation) Engineering or Transportation Planning (or similar). We are looking for an individual who wants to learn. A self-starter who can take initiative. Someone who is open to tasks that may be unfamiliar or new. A strong candidate should have experience with Microsoft products (specifically Excel). Preference to candidates who have been exposed to CAD (AutoCAD or MicroStation) and/or ArcGIS.
Houston Permitting CenterTechnical Writing and using Adobe Acrobat
Capital Projects - Infrastructure Delivery LineMust be at least a High School Senior. College students are preferred. Know how to use computers and the Microsoft office suite (excel and word mostly). Good communication skill, good attendance and punctuality. Interested in Engineering field is preferred. Specific engineering knowledge is not not required, but is a plus.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Thanks for your interest in the City of Houston's Youth Summer Jobs Program, which will run from June 9– July, 2031. Interns will work 32 hours per week. This program provides an excellent opportunity for you to earn and learn by becoming a member of the team that takes care of the residents of the nation’s 4th largest city.
Note - Successful candidates will be required to pass a background check.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The position is physically comfortable, the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. Some positions require working outside in varied weather conditions, and the ability to use certain tools.
There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions. Some positions are outdoors and require the ability to function in warm/hot weather conditions.
