Seasonal On-site Classroom Observer (Baltimore, MD) (Staff Wage)

The Center to Promote Effective Youth Development (Youth-Nex) in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for multiple PART-TIME positions in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Those hired in the Classroom Observer (Wage) position will conduct classroom observations within elementary and/or middle schools enrolled in research projects being conducted with the Anne Arundel County Public School System in Maryland. Hours for these positions will vary depending on the schools involved; hires can expect to work between 16-24 hours per week, with hours varying by week based on school availability and project schedules.  Classroom observers will work approximately 8 to 12 weeks in the Fall of 2024 beginning with professional training and reliability certification.

 
Incumbents will be collecting data in elementary and middle school classrooms using the ASSIST and CARES observational measures. The ASSIST stands for “Assessing School Settings: Interactions of Students and Teachers” observational measure and the CARES stands for the “Culturally and Racial Equity Sustaining Classroom Assessment System”. Once hired into the position, classroom observers will complete the ASSIST and CARES certifications (i.e., a training and reliability assessments, one for each measure) to be prepared for on-site classroom observations. Financial compensation will be provided by the department for training time. Training and reliability testing will occur in August 2024, and on-site classroom observations will occur from September to November 2024. Duties include scheduling and completing elementary and middle school-based, in-classroom observations with provided digital equipment (tablets).

Requirements include: 

Some college experience.Reliable transportation to be able to travel between schools in Anne Arundel County, MD. Availability to work a minimum of 8 hours per week during typical school hours Ability to use and perform basic troubleshooting of technology, including tablets, is essential. Exceptional organization skills and the ability to work independentlyAbility to work effectively with diverse populations. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. 

 
Preference will be given to candidates with some coursework or experience in education or social science research. 

Anticipated position compensation: $16.00 Hourly

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
