Seasonal Worker - Forestry
The City of Littleton is seeking energetic individuals who enjoy working outdoors with our Forestry staff. The seasonal staff will maintain planted and landscaped outdoor areas of city-owned properties and keep areas in a healthy and attractive condition including watering, planting, mulching, fertilizing, small tree care, assisting with tree removals, stump grinding, and other related duties. The City of Littleton believes in attracting and retaining the best talent and our strategies include **hiring in at market pay** and creating career development opportunities. **Starting pay $20 per hour** This seasonal position is non-exempt per FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. **Work Schedule:** This seasonal position will work a “9/80 work week” schedule. For one week, employees work longer workdays with four nine-hour days (6:00 AM – 3:30 PM), Monday through Thursday. Every other Friday they work an eight-hour day (6:00 AM – 2:30 PM) with the alternating Friday being an off day. **Application Deadline** : Applications will be accepted until finalists are identified or the position is filled, but **preference will be given to complete applications received by September 16, 2024** . Those who do not apply by this date may or may not be considered. **ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:** + Maintains planted and landscaped outdoor areas of city-owned properties in a healthy and attractive condition including watering, planting, fertilizing, small tree care, assistance with tree removals, stump grinding, and other related duties. + Assists our Grounds team with snow removal and events. + Performs other assignments and projects as required. **MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:** + Must be 18 years or older. + Requires a valid driver's license. + Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check, motor vehicle records check, drug screen and physical. **KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:** + Basic knowledge of the operation and maintenance to safely operate the following power equipment and vehicles: water truck, handsaws, chainsaws, chipper, Toolcat, and truck with trailer. + Ability to perform strenuous physical work which involves lifting and handling objects frequently which weigh up to 80 pounds from ground to waist height; ability to walk for 3-8 hours per day; ability to frequently handle miscellaneous maintenance equipment, logs, and branches weighing up to 50 pounds. + Requires ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, feel, talk, hear voices, equipment engines, approaching traffic, near and/far visual acuity, depth perception, and color vision to perform essential functions of the position. + Basic knowledge of traffic safety precautions. + Basic knowledge to safely operate the following equipment and vehicles: truck with mounted water tank, chipper truck, dump truck with hydraulic bed; hand shovels, backpack weed sprayer, rakes, shovels, pickaxes. Ability to operate tree chipper and chain saws following instruction and on-the-job training. + Basic knowledge of or the ability to learn the principles of landscape, landscape construction and maintenance, tree and shrub planting, watering, care, and pruning. + Ability to perform work safely, near vehicle traffic. Basic knowledge of traffic safety precautions. + Ability to understand verbal information and instruction. **WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:** + Work is performed indoors in a shop environment; and outdoors and includes exposure to adverse weather conditions; noise exposure up to 130 decibels (unprotected exposure) (use of protective hearing devices is mandatory for all laboring positions working with or in proximity to gasoline engine-powered maintenance equipment to reduce noise exposure to permissible OSHA exposure levels); exposure to equipment vibrations; fumes, and odors from engine exhausts and chemicals; odors, dusts, mists, gases, pollens, molds, insects, rodents; mechanical and electrical hazards; work in high exposed work sites; exposure to burn potential from hot exhaust systems; explosive fumes from fuels and chemicals; exposure to toxic and caustic chemicals contained in pesticides, fertilizers and lubricants.
