SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Positions in this class are assigned to the local school to assist the administration maintain a safe and secure learning environment for the school community. Under the general supervision of the security team leader, assists in screening visitor access to school facilities, maintaining student class attendance, and other responsibilities related to school security operations. Receives guidance and assistance from the security team leader on the more difficult or unusual situations.

CERTIFICATE LICENSE:
Possession of a valid Maryland class C noncommercial driver's license, or equivalent. First aid and CPR certification.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Knowledge of procedures and practices for ensuring the safety and welfare of others. Knowledge of behavior management techniques. Knowledge of security practices and procedures. Investigative procedures knowledge desirable. Must know, or have the ability to rapidly acquire specific knowledge of, school and MCPS policies and procedures on student attendance, suspension, student involvement, and standards of student behavior. Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff, and to understand the role of each staff member having responsibility for student attendance, behavior, and building security. Ability to work harmoniously with staff and students and to perform assigned tasks under team leader supervision. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
High School or GED diploma required. Associates degree preferred. College coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields. Experience in work involving the welfare and safety of students or others, preferably in an educational environment. Experience in investigation desirable. Experience in safety and security of persons and property, preferably as a police officer. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
