**Description:**

MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center is a 25-bed critical access hospital, which provides a vital lifesaving link to rural communities in Clayton County and surrounding areas through ambulance and emergency services. The emergency department is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with board certified physicians and advanced level practitioners who are well-trained to treat emergency needs. MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center is certified as a Level IV Trauma Center by the Iowa Department of Public Health.
Provides various security-related services in a professional and courteous manner. Provides protection to Mercy Medical Center, its equipment and supplies against hazards of fire, theft, damage, or other unsafe or illegal situations. Patrols assigned areas of facilities and grounds on foot or in motorized vehicle according to established schedule and investigate unusual occurrences and to deter possible theft, vandalism and physical violence and to detect unauthorized vehicles or persons on Medical Center property. Intercepts unauthorized individuals on hospital grounds. Enforces MMC’s parking policy in a fair and equitable manner. Checks to ensure hospital entrances, doors, gates, and windows are securely locked and inspect equipment, machinery, alarms, and sprinkler systems and so forth to ensure it are properly working. Notifies appropriate personnel of problems as necessary Demonstrates ability to manage a security related incident if warranted and investigate incidents thoroughly in order to obtain related evidence necessary to provide documentation. Manages non-physical and physical situations involving patients, visitors, staff, etc. using Mandt System, while ensuring the safety of all concerned. This will potentially involve holding/restraining individuals who may be violent in nature. Able to converse with patients of all diagnosis for extended period of time. Responds to stat calls regarding campus emergency situations, fire, theft, endangerment of life and property, Dr. Strong, Code Silver, suspicious activity as required. Operates all security related equipment efficiently. Equipment includes the closed circuit television system, portable walkie-talkie, hospital security vehicle, and the hospital switchboard. Records activities and responses on the daily report form, completing maintenance requisitions and incident reports as required. Reports incidents or apparent potential loss of hospital, associate, patient or visitor property thorough fire, theft or vandalism. Maintains chronological log noting significant events, prepares supplementary reports as required. Reports violations of public law and infractions of Mercy’s policies and practices to Security Supervisor or other designee. Assists patients and visitors with directions and information; minor automotive difficulties such as dead battery, flat tire, weather related difficulties, locked out of vehicle, out of fuel, etc. Escorts associates, visitors and patients to hospital parking lots, as requested. Provides for the maintenance and cleanliness of MMC’s fleet vehicles, service vehicles, and various departmental vehicles. Performs various maintenance procedures in a safe, efficient manner at all times, giving proper consideration to urgency of situation at hand. Shovels snow, uses snow blower, transports 50-pound bags of salt and spreads salt as needed. Performs some minor plumbing related duties (plunging, etc.) Performs various maintenance procedures in a safe, efficient manner at all times, giving proper consideration to urgency of situation at hand. Completes task as assigned on work orders when performing maintenance activities. Laterally transfers patients/deceased patients. Assists with and guarantees the secure arrival of deceased patients to the morgue, and/or the mortician’s custody. Actively participates in department meetings, committees, and in-services. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.

Complies with Safety and Infection Control Policies and Procedures. Must be able to perform various lower skilled maintenance activities. Must be able to learn and operate the Motorola portable walkie-talkie. Required to increase/decrease work schedule and/or vary hours depending on the needs of the department: Assigned hours within the shift, starting time, or days of work are subject to change based on departmental and/or organizational needs.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
+ Must be able to stand and walk (80%) the majority of working hours.
+ Walk several miles per day.
+ Must be able to tolerate continuous walking, bending, standing and kneeling.
+ Job requires the ability to continuously (80% of work time) lift and carry objects, including carrying, stacking (10-12) traffic cones 15-25 feet and carrying traffic barricades, 15 pound each 15-25 feet.
+ Must be able to occasionally lift heavy loads up to 50 lbs.
+ Must be able to work outside approximately 70% of the time in all weather conditions such as cold, heat & humidity.
+ Must be able to climb six to ten foot ladders in upward and downward directions, including upright ladders attached to walls for access to roof areas.
+ Associate must be able to climb steel rung ladder 15 feet. To change light bulbs, turn off valves, check for leaks etc.
+ Mobility, dexterity, fine motor skills and ability to use hands in repetitive motion tasks, such as grasping and fine manipulating is required.
+ Must be able to climb and move across elevated walkways (catwalk)Must be able to ascend and descend several flights of stairs without stopping.
+ Must be able to move freely on/off floor during situations with patient and facility related items.
+ Must be able to enter/exit vehicle 5 – 10 times per 8-hour shift.
+ Must be able to stand in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time.
+ Must be able to work with arms above head for extended periods of time up to 50 percent of the time.
+ Occasional (approx 30%) exposure to hazards including cuts, burns, etc. when operating equipment.
+ Occasional (approx 30%) exposure to hazardous chemicals, medical infectious waste, infectious diseases through patient contact.
+ Works around moving machinery and is occasionally exposed to dust, vapor, fumes, gases, radiation, and biological vectors.
+ Frequent exposure to high noise levels.
+ Requires visual acuity, the ability to speak and the ability to hear speech.
+ Must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives.

The Security Officer will take an active role in the Security Management Program which provides for the safety and well being of all individuals associated with the facilities of Mercy Medical Center (MMC). Assists patients and visitors with directions and information. Actively demonstrates the organization’s mission and core values, and conducts oneself at all times in a manner consistent with these values.
According to prescribed procedures, patrols various areas of the Hospital facilities and grounds and acts to deter loss of hospital, associate, patient and visitor property, by intercepting unauthorized individuals and investigating unusual incidents. Assists to maintain order as needed. While on patrol, examines doors, windows and gates to ensure they are secure, inspects equipment and machinery to ascertain if tampering has occurred and reports all irregularities.
The Security Officer also provides for various lower level maintenance activities to be accomplished.

**Education:**
+ High school graduate or GED required.
+ Must be able to read and write English and perform basic mathematical calculations.
+ Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice preferred.
