The University of Virginia Police Department (UPD) seeks applicants for the Security Sergeant position at our UVA Darden Metro campus, located in the nation's capital. Perched on the top two floors of the Rosslyn City Center, located at 11 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia, at the heart of the Rosslyn neighborhood, in the Metropolitan DC area, the campus is comprised of 40,000 square feet of learning space.
UPD is seeking applicants who want to serve the community and help keep one of the University's satellite campuses safe.
As a Security Sergeant at one of the nation’s top public universities, with its satellite campus being located in the Washington DC Metropolitan area, you will be serving in a vibrant community with a variety of culture, recreation, and entertainment opportunities – suitable for families and young professionals.

At UPD, Security Sergeants are un-armed, uniformed non-sworn employees who play an integral role in the overall safety and security at the University.
Responsibilities Include:
Engage in community service through fair and impartial practices. Decisions and enforcement will not be predicated on race, gender, religion or sexual orientation.
Serve as a member of the supervisory team for the UPD security division.
May assist law enforcement officers with securing crime scenes.
Provide personal, equipment, and property security in assigned areas.
Provide daily operational leadership for the department providing security services.
Function as a working supervisor; duties include unlocking and checking the building and observing and reporting suspicious activity to appropriate parties.
Act as a campus security authority as defined by the federal Jeane Clery Disclosure Act.
Act as a responsible employee under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which includes timely reporting of incidents of sexual harassment/misconduct.
Responsible for supervising, training and evaluating staff.
Responsible party (Shift Supervisor) for each assigned shift and is responsible to the Director of Security for resolving problems and working with other University departments and community agencies.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent is required, preference is given to applicants with an associate degree or higher.
At least two years of work experience in a security or related field.
Applicants must pass the DCJS Campus Security Officer certification and pass Security CIT training. (Training will be provided by the department)
A Valid Virginia Driver's license with a positive points balance is required, if applicants have an out of state driver's license they must be able to obtain a VA license within 90 days of employment.
Previous supervisory experience and the ability to lead by example and mentor team members.
The ability to appropriately apply safety principles, evaluate situations, and routinely make decisions under varying and often rapidly evolving situations.
Applicants must possess strong oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and approachable, and courteous engagement with the community.
The ability to work with a team to facilitate operations between Security Officers.
Applicants must be able to quickly learn new technologies, and have strong skills in Microsoft Office tools.
Must possess the ability to project staffing schedules, navigate various computer programming applications and automated alerting devices.
Applicants must be able to train subordinates on basic Security functions, assignments, and applications.
Applicants must be able to apply progressive discipline concepts and interface with HR representatives for personnel issues
Applicants must be able to work a flexible schedule including mandatory overtime as a result of unforeseen circumstances and coverage requirements.
Applicants must be comfortable with working in a variety of environments.
Candidates will be required to complete a background check and drug screen prior to their first day of employment, the selected candidate will also be required to complete a health screen per University policy.
