Job PurposeTo maintain and expand the Wildflower Center’s conservation seed bank, with a particular focus on protecting uncommon and threatened plants from across Texas. The position will involve stewardship of the existing collections including seed preparation, data organization, seed viability testing, and development of standard protocols, as well as extensive fieldwork to collect germplasm and plant demographic data.
Job ResponsibilitiesSupervision of seed lab. Coordinate usage by volunteers, UT students, and staff from various Wildflower Center teams and generally support seed lab activities as needed.
Supervision of Wildflower Center seed bank, including seed cleaning, organization of accessions, database management, coordination of germination trials, and development of seed bank protocols and workflow.
Writing and coordination of permit applications, landowner access, and project reports.
Assisting with the creation of grant proposals and project budgets.
Travel coordination for fieldwork and professional development activities.
Fieldwork for seed collections and other conservation actions for rare/target plant species across Texas. Most fieldwork will involve day trips to nearby preserves, but may also include multi-day travel to locations throughout Texas such as Big Bend State Park and Big Thicket. Occasional trips for remote fieldwork may involve extensive hiking and multi-day camping.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Basic computer capabilities (Excel, Word, internet, and email).
Demonstration of excellent organizational skills and time management.
Willingness to work as part of a team.
Experience with ecological or conservation-focused fieldwork.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred QualificationsBachelor’s degree in related field.
Experience with seed banking and/or plant conservation.
Experience working with state/federal agencies and permitting processes.
Experience with lab work.
Familiarity with Texas flora.
Driving Required
This job requires a class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
Salary$45,000 + depending on qualifications
Working ConditionsWork outside in field conditions, including in high grasses, remote locations, and all kinds of weather.
Must comply with all lab safety policies, practices, and procedures.
Must work in close association with team members both in the lab and in the field.
Must be willing to hike and camp as needed for remote fieldwork.
Some work with standard lab chemicals including tetrazolium chloride, ethanol, and calcium chloride.
Work Shift
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Evening and weekend work may be required for special events.
