Self-Advocacy Discipline Coordinator & Community Engagement Coordinator - Georgetown’s Leadership Development in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities

The GU Center for Child & Human Development (GUCCHD) is dedicated to fostering a stronger society by promoting the wellbeing of ALL children, adults and families and creating more inclusive communities. We execute this mission through research, training & technical assistance, scholarship, and thought leadership. Georgetown University’s Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities Program (GULEND) is offered by the Center, and is a 9-month, graduate level professional development opportunity for clinicians, practitioners, and program leaders at any level of their careers to learn alongside individuals with disabilities and family members. The GULEND learning community significantly involves people with neurodevelopmental disabilities in self- and community-roles, as well as family members and caregivers. The GULEND Program trains professionals, individuals with disabilities, and family members who contribute to the local developmental disabilities (DD) systems in the District and surrounding areas.

The individual in the dual role of Self-Advocacy Discipline Coordinator and Community Engagement Coordinator will be a key team member involved in implementing the GULEND program. The Self-Advocacy Discipline Coordinator and Community Engagement Coordinator is expected to be a professional with extensive personal and familial experience navigating health care and educational systems with the lens of neurodevelopmental disabilities. The Self-Advocacy Discipline Coordinator and Community Engagement Coordinator should have a deep understanding of ways to serve people with neurodevelopmental disabilities that are family-centered and culturally and linguistically competent across the lifespan. The incumbent plays a key role in co-developing content with other discipline coordinators about disability, disability culture, and disability justice. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

Community Engagement Coordinator

Build new relationships with members of the local community of self- and community-advocates by attending select events about the disability community in the local area.

Make overall recommendations to the GULEND Curriculum team for guest speakers with disabilities to engage in specific class sessions.

Coordinate with individuals with disabilities who are guest speakers– and as appropriate, members of care teams that are supporting guest speakers with disabilities– to ensure that the access needs of guest speakers are being met to attend sessions virtually or in-person.  It is expected that the Community Engagement Coordinator will be able to work with one guest speaker with disabilities each week of the program year, in advance of visits by guest speakers to the GULEND learning community.

Prepare guest speakers with disabilities to engage with students by: providing background about who members of the GULEND learning community are. working with guest speakers with disabilities to develop and finalize the content of topics, presentations, and engagement activities, and ensuring that trauma-informed approaches are utilized in engaging with disabled guest speakers.

Self-Advocacy Discipline Coordinator

Help recruit and advise individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities to participate as trainees, advising one trainee in the self-advocacy role each program year.

Work with and mentor self-advocate trainees to help them grow their own leadership and advocacy skills for themselves and with and on behalf of others in the community through GULEND.

Co-develop with other GULEND faculty and guest faculty curricular content for the GULEND learning community on models of disability, disability culture, disability justice and ways that meaningful inclusion of people with neurodevelopmental disabilities can contribute to larger efforts to advance equity.

Work Interactions

The Self-Advocacy Discipline Coordinator and Community Engagement Coordinator reports to the Center Administrator, and receives programmatic direction from the GULEND Director. They represent the work of the GULEND and Georgetown University through their interactions with other discipline coordinators, GUCCHD faculty, staff, guest lecturers and trainees. The Self-Advocacy Discipline Coordinator and Community Engagement Coordinator. will interact with GULEND colleagues, advocates with lived experience of disabilities who are guest speakers for GULEND, and their caregivers, as well as leaders from partner organizations.

Requirements and Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree; Master’s degree preferred

1- 3 years of experience in an academic setting, or relevant combination of education and experience for well-qualified candidate

Strong written and verbal communication, research and networking skills

Good organizational skills, and the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple tasks that unfold over the course of the GULEND program year

Ability to deal effectively and professionally with a variety of individuals, including individuals with autism, intellectual disabilities, and other neurodevelopmental and acquired disabilities

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$22.88 - $42.10

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
