Senior Accountant

The University of Virginia (UVA), a leading public institution, is seeking a dynamic and experienced senior accountant to join UVAFinance within the central finance office.  This role offers an exciting opportunity to support the UVA’s financial operations, contributing to its mission of excellence.  The position offers hybrid and in-person work options.

Reporting to the Director of Financial Reporting and Accounting, the Senior Accountant will play a key role in Financial Reporting, Compliance and Accounting.  This position requires expertise in accounting principles, a strong focus on collaboration, and a customer-oriented approach to help teams achieve their operational goals.

Responsibilities and Duties:

The Senior Accountant will support the Director of Financial Reporting in the following areas:

Prepare and review the quarterly and year-end financial statements. Will actively work with other departments, and internal/external auditors.Assist in compiling external financial data reports (IPEDS, NACUBO, etc.).Develop, review, and document financial accounting and operational policies and procedures.Coordinate accounting matters across departments, ensuring reconciliations and compliance with relevant controls.Analyze and implement new GASB Standards, including preparing formal memoranda.Perform analysis of financial transactions to ensure compliance with federal, state, and University standards and document associated business processes.Verify journal entries accounting classifications, and prepare related documentation.Analyze financial reports and records, providing recommendations on reserves, assets and expenditures for the Financial Accounting and Reporting group.Collaborate with other Finance teams on areas such as cost accounting, sponsored research, leases and tax, and others.In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated ability to work with a complex accounting system and spreadsheet software.Ability to perform detailed work with numerical data and to make arithmetical calculations rapidly and accurately; ability to prepare financial reports and handle one or more aspects of fiscal operations.Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of professional individuals.Ability to exercise appropriate judgment in making decisions related to accounting entries and in resolving customer inquiries.Excellent analytical and problem-solving skillsExperience preparing or auditing financial statements / financial reportingExceptional organization and execution/follow-up skillsA strategic mindset with the ability to see big picture while diving into detailed analyses when neededExcellent written and verbal communication skillsAbility to effectively work with many different teams across the organization

  

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree in finance related field
Experience: Five years of experience.
Licensure: CPA is typically possessed or acquired while in the position.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications:

Required Education: Bachelor’s degree (Business or Accounting preferred).Preferred Education:  Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in AccountingRequired Experience: 5 years of accounting work experience.Preferred Qualification: Active CPA licenseRequired Computer Applications: Microsoft ExcelPreferred Computer Applications: Workday

This position will remain open until filled.  This is an Exempt level, benefited position. Anticipated Hiring Range: $98,000-110,000 per year commensurate with education and experience. This position will not sponsor applicants for Visas. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
