The role

Senior Accountant (Japan Payroll Specialist) will be responsible for a variety of financial functions including managing payroll, all payroll-related month-end close, account and fluctuation analysis, audits, day to day accounting operations, accounting research and process improvements. The Senior Accountant is expected to function at a high level of expertise and competency and is expected to use sound judgment while producing consistent results. Problem solving and initiative, with a strong desire to analyze, investigate, and resolve are essential elements for success in this position.  The Senior Accountant reports to the Senior Payroll Manager.

Responsible for period-end closing activities for payroll related areas. Tasks include prepare/review journal entries (vacation, bonus, etc.), accruals, and reconciliations as well as other duties in accordance with the company timelines and schedule. Coordinate with the payroll service provider and regulatory agencies to maintain federal, state, and local taxing authority accounts Responsible for taking the lead role in the execution, research, and review of payroll special projects such as the creation and/or streamlining of new department processes and procedures, implementation of new BDO upgrades or best practices recommended by BDO, or projects required by management. Prepare, develop, and update procedures to ensure that the department is in compliance with internal control requirements. Responsible for payroll governmental/statutory reporting. Maps payroll journal entries from payroll into the accounting system. Researches payroll journal entry exceptions and provide backup and solution. Reviewing, approving and ensuring appropriate general ledger coding of all payroll, benefit and related invoices. Act as a liaison between ERP and HR to resolve any internal issues. Annual support for independent SOX and financial statement audit. Other Finance projects and ad-hoc reporting as needed.

 

What you’ll bring

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred. Minimum of 5 years of payroll processing experience. Strong working knowledge of Japanese payroll operation and internal controls. Experience with integrated ERP and financial reporting systems (Oracle R12 utilized). Experience with payroll processing  for North America and international entities. Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables. Functional knowledge of additional Microsoft Office programs. Knowledge of Japanese rules and regulations (especially California) is a plus. Solid attention to detail with excellent communication skills.
