Senior Accountant - Public Sector, Federal Civilian

Job Summary:

BDO is seeking an experienced accounting professional with a strong finance background to support a federal civilian client. The individual in this position should have proven knowledge and success in ensuring accuracy, integrity, and timeliness in financial reporting within the federal sector.

Job Duties:

Assists in preparing various time-sensitive financial transactions and reports for the client, ensuring adherence to deadlines Prepares, records, and adjusts various journal entries to support Treasury submissions, including accruals, eliminations, and other necessary financial actions Takes responsibility for assigned areas (e.g., organizational entity, program, or functional area), preparing, recording, interpreting, and reporting federal financial transactions and events Conducts recurring and special-purpose reconciliations to ensure data accuracy and prepare financial reports, statements, and related documentation per prescribed formats to meet reporting requirements established by Treasury, OMB, other accounting authorities, and legislation such as the Chief Financial Officers Act Prepares annual financial statements following Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), encompassing disclosures, footnotes, supporting schedules/analytical files, and collecting and consolidating supplemental data to analyze the Service’s actual financial performance against established measures Maintains clear audit trails from the general ledger to subsidiary records and from the accounting system to interfacing management systems Ensures adherence to all applicable laws, regulations, and standards established by organizations such as the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board (FASAB), GAAP, OMB, and GAO Delivers a full range of services that uses their educational background, experience, and organizational skills while serving BDO’s dynamic public sector client base Assists with firm practice, solution, and business development initiatives with guidance from Public Sector leadership Supports task areas while coordinating closely with engagement team management and client leadership on strategy, planning, execution, status, and review processes Supports problem solving and fact finding, while working side by side with experienced team members, management, and client leadership Adapts to a changing client environment while meeting client expectations Manages priorities and works effectively to initiate correspondence and task completion; supports multiple efforts through flexible multi-task coordination Provides summary recommendations to team leadership regarding assigned tasks Applies fundamental industry knowledge and standards to support client reviews, improvements, and/or implementations Communicates and maintains relationships with key client personnel to ensure shared understanding of processes, operations, and functions Prepares presentations, briefings, and actively participates in client meetings and day-to-day interactions Communicates with team management through effective status reporting and demonstrates ownership and accountability for assigned task areas and work products Establishes professional rapport with clients and other organizations Attends relevant training, seminars, and/or conferences to stay current with technical skills that align with client’s needs and changes in the industry Supports recruiting efforts by identifying and referring potential candidates Other duties as required

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Serves as a mentor / career advisor to Public Sector staff as appropriate

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Education

Bachelor’s Degree, required, focus in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, preferred

Experience

Six (6) or more years of accounting, finance, or business administration experience, required Experience supporting the federal government in accounting, general ledger, journal entries, reconciliations, and related financial processes, required Six (6) or more years of experience supporting the federal government in accounting, general ledger, journal entries, reconciliations, and related financial processes, preferred Experience with payments, relocations, cash management, and employee travel claims processing within federal agencies, preferred Experience preparing annual federal financial statements, preferred Experience with preparing financial products or reports, preferred Experience working at a professional services firm, preferred

License(s)/Certification(s)

Ability to obtain and maintain government agency suitability or security clearance, required Relevant Professional certification, such as CPA, CGFM, or CDFM, preferred
