Senior AI Software Applications Engineer

We are the Intelligent Combat Platforms Group, and our mission is to ensure our Nation maintains an operational advantage on the future battlefield by advancing innovative software applications that integrate artificial intelligence, autonomy, manned-unmanned teaming, and novel autonomous aircraft design (e.g., drones) and testing. We believe the future of warfare will be defined by intelligent, autonomous systems operating with machine precision at machine speeds. Our objective is to develop and deploy software platforms that enable machine precision decision-making in real-time for future autonomous systems and warfighters enhanced by intelligent applications. Whether it’s designing integrated AI application frameworks that drive autonomous wingman behaviors, creating real-time collaboration tools and data analytic architectures, or building novel AI development platforms, the Intelligent Combat Platforms Group is at the forefront of innovation. Three of our recent projects (DARPA Air Combat Evolution, AFRL Golden Horde, and Air Force SkyBorg) have been featured in recent news articles, highlighting our impact and pioneering work. As a Senior AI Applications Software Developer, you will… Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including AI/ML experts, system architects, and domain specialists to cultivate robust engineering practices for developing AI-powered applications. Design and implement scalable, testable, and maintainable architectures that integrate advanced AI algorithms and autonomous system components into full stack solutions. Leverage a diverse technology stack—from high-performance visualization tools and dynamic frontend frameworks to robust backend architectures—to build applications that effectively harness AI functionalities. Engage with sponsors and stakeholders to define functional and system requirements, translating business needs into scalable, AI-enabled application solutions. Develop and maintain high-quality code for simulation, visualization, and full stack development, utilizing both static and dynamic analysis tools for continuous improvement in incremental delivery cycles. Integrate software with hardware components and interface AI modules into operational environments, ensuring interoperability and optimal system performance. Support real-time testing and validation of AI-enabled applications in simulated and operational settings to verify system reliability, suitability, and performance. Leverage cybersecurity expertise to integrate DEVSECOPS methodologies into the development lifecycle, implement thorough security hardening practices, and coordinate with network security teams to secure the necessary approvals for deploying AI-enabled applications. Collaborate with a complementary team of engineers, scientists, and software developers to deliver innovative AI application solutions that enhance operational effectiveness for the warfighter. Qualifications You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you… B.S. or higher level of education in Computer Science or equivalent degree Are fluent in at least one major programming language such as C/C++, Java, Python, assembly, etc. Have demonstrated strength with communication skills - both verbal and written and possess the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment. Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) Experience with NoSQL and relation databases. Experience with Git, Gitlab Continuous Integration and Deployment, or equivalent experience. Strong understanding of API design, REST APIs, and Oauth. Experience with Department of Defense Information Assurance standards and certification processes. Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship. You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you... Have a Master's degree or Ph.D. in Computer/Software Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or another related technical degree. Have experience leading projects that included implementing AI and autonomy algorithms in physical systems. Experience with dynamic web front end frameworks such as VueJs, React or Angular in addition to the corresponding software architecture design Extensive experience with Python/Flask, Python/FastAPI, and Java Extensive experience with Python/Flask, Python/FastAPI, Java/Spring Experience with relational and non-relational databases, especially in regards to database design and scalability Have substantial experience decomposing high-level program requirements into specific team tasks and objectives. The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
