Senior Applied Scientist
We are hiring a **Senior Applied Scientist** in **Redmond, WA** or **Mountain View, CA** , to empower the rest of Microsoft’s teams and customers to build on the Core Search and AI team’s industrial grade machine learning. A critical part of the role is to develop an end-to-end understanding of Core Search and Artificial Intelligence (AI) models and to adapt these models and techniques to new search challenges across the company. This role will require solving both data science and engineering challenges. We have seen little innovation in search in the last decade and we are looking for people who want to build the next generation of search using advanced AI technologies at scale. We are responsible for the largest machine learning models at Microsoft by volume and take pride in being the first in the world to solve many practical AI at Scale challenges. Our work spans a very large scope of scenarios including delivering high quality search results from a massive document corpus, extractive and abstractive summarization to generate document snippets, personalization, machine reading comprehension, and document recommendations. As a team, we leverage the diverse backgrounds and experiences of engineers, scientists, and program managers to help us realize our goal of making the world smarter and more productive. The Core Search and AI team is the leading applied machine learning team at Microsoft responsible for delivering the highest-quality search experience to over 500M+ monthly active users around the world in Microsoft’s search engine, Bing and other dependent search engines such as Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, and new startups like Neeva. **Responsibilities** + Fine-tune, domain adapt and distill large scale NLP models for real-world large-scale applications. + Develop an intuition for strategies to use across diverse, multi-lingual customer datasets and challenges. + Adapt unstructured domain agnostic models and techniques to be robust when processing structured and semi-structured data. + Work on the full lifecycle of machine learning development including training data collection, feature engineering, model training, offline and online experimentation. + Develop accurate solutions that function well in low resources and compliant environments. + Design a blueprint for how to get high quality labels, low-cost labels for a wide range of models (retrival, ranking, machine reading comprehension) from the crowd + Contribute to experimentation infrastructure and proofs-of-concept to test outnew ideas and concepts. + Partner effectively with program management, engineers, and other functions across products and with external customers. **Qualifications** **Required/Minimum Qualifications:** + Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience + OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience + OR Doctorate in Statistics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience + OR equivalent experience. + 3+ years of experience working with Natural Language Processing (NLP) or Machine Learning (ML) technologies. **Additional/Preferred Qualifications** + MS or PhD in computer science or related field. + Experience applying Large Language Models to real-world product scenarios, including prompt tuning, model training, and conducting experiments to deploy in actual product environments. + Experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch + Experience building large scale cloud-based solutions. Applied Sciences IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
