Minimum Qualifications Education, Experience and CertificationsJuris Doctor Degree, admission to the New York State Bar and admitted to practice in New York State and Federal courts is requiredMinimum 5 years of legal experience preferredExperience in one or more of the following areas: of law relevant to NYPA, such as energy, regulatory, litigation, commercial and finance, and employmentExperience in utility industry preferred
Duties Description ResponsibilitiesUnder the general direction of an Assistant General Counsel, work directly with senior management to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of NYPA’s and its subsidiaries’ business operations to provide relevant legal advice, research and supportResearch recent changes in law, rules and regulations related to NYPA’s and its subsidiaries’ business activities, and draft relevant memoranda and/or update governance or transactional documents accordinglyConduct legal research, analyze and draft legal opinions and briefsAttend meetings with senior management, with or without senor level attorneys, and provide support and counsel relative to key legal issues to support the business unitsHandle cases and informal disputes on behalf of NYPA and its subsidiaries with supervisory oversight in judicial or other administrative forumsInteract with clients to develop and implement strategies that further NYPA’s and its subsidiaries programs and related business activitiesServe on committees and/or task forces and report to Assistant General Counsel on progress and developments as legal issues ariseReport on major developments to supervisory senior attorneys and/or an Assistant General CounselUp to 25% travel primarily within NY State
Additional Comments Provides legal advice/counsel to all NYPA’s business and functional areas. Researches, analyzes, and interprets proposed and existing laws, statutes, and regulations. Identifies, monitors, and addresses issues of legal risk. Informs and contributes to the structuring, drafting, negotiating and/or approval of legal contracts, letters of agreement, policies and other documents. May represent NYPA during litigation, arbitration, mediation or other disputes with courts, government agencies, or other legal authorities. Specialties may include but are not limited to Contract Management, Employment Law, Governmental/Regulatory Affairs and Litigation.
