Flower Foods, Inc. is looking to add a talented Senior Bakery Scientist to our team!

 

Title: Senior Bakery Scientist

Salary Range: 80,000 – 90,000/year

Office Location: Thomasville, GA

Travel: Requires travel up to 40%

 

Job Summary:

The bakery scientist will lead medium complexity R&D initiatives to improve shelf life, reduce ingredient costs, and improve efficiency in the bakeries. Position conducts bench-top experiments and commercializes at the bakery. Partners closely with Operations, Regulatory, Finance, Brand Team and Quality. Position requires formulations for new products, product improvements, and cost savings.

This role requires a self-driven and motivated professional who is both adaptable and flexible in a fast-paced environment. You will need the ability to effectively proactively work on development projects while dealing with ambiguity and constant change. It also requires demonstration of competency for all on-the-job activities that may have a direct or indirect effect on product safety, legality and/or quality.

Rising to the Challenge: Position Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Collaborate with cross functional team members to deliver/execute innovation, renovation, quality improvement and cost savings projects.
• Partner with marketing and consumer research to co-create the innovation/renovation pipeline for bread and buns to achieve business objectives.
• Must demonstrate ability to prioritize and successfully manage multiple projects with various degrees of complexity and scope.
• Conduct Bench-top experiments on assigned products (breads, snacks, etc.).
• Lead plant trials in partnership with Operations.
• Support with manufacturing plants with troubleshooting for new products and productivity programs.
• Confirm shelf life, nutrition, and claims.
• Use DEVEX PLM Software to store formulas.
• Use sensory data to develop highly liked consumer products.
• Train and manage temporary workers.
• Use analytical equipment to test products.
• Document analytical data, formulations, sensory results, cutting summaries as required.
• Demonstrate ability to solve problems, identify, collect and analyze data/results to make technical assessments and provide actionable recommendation/direction to product development projects.
• Must demonstrate ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Collaborate with key suppliers to identify/source ingredients and leverage their expertise in ingredient functionality/applications and to help with development of innovation/renovation/cost savings projects.
• Provide project updates to the R&D leadership team and the business unit.
• Practice and comply with all Company policies and procedures (EEO, Harassment, Safety, Sarbanes Oxley, etc.).
• Perform other duties which are deemed by management to be an integral part of the job, including but not limited to fulfillment of work schedules, adherence to attendance policies, and other applicable operating rules, policies and procedures.

Knead to Know: Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years’ bakery industry R&D experience with technical knowledge in Product Development, Manufacturing, and/or Operations is preferred.
• 5+ years’ significant product development and commercialization experience of baked goods. Experience in bread, buns, and cakes is preferred.
• Experience on scale-up from lab to production is preferred.

Additional Ingredients: Essential Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Bakery Science, Culinology, Chemical Engineering or other closely related field. Master’s degree preferred.
