Canoo’s mission is to bring EVs to Everyone and build a world-class team to deploy this sustainable mobility revolution. We have developed breakthrough electric vehicles that are reinventing the automotive landscape with pioneering technologies, award-winning designs, and a unique business model that spans all owners in the full lifecycle of the vehicle. Canoo is starting production and is distinguished by its pioneering and experienced team of technologists, engineers, and designers. With offices around the country, the company is scaling quickly and seeking candidates who love to challenge themselves, are motivated by purpose, and possess a strong desire to get things done.

The “Canoo Way”

Canoo’s success is the direct result of our disciplined application of our core operating principles and drills, which are based on three main principles: Think 80/20 (“Important versus less important”), Act 30/30 (“Reduce waste and increase output”), and Live 90/10 (“We have each other’s back”). We hire based on “MET” - Mindset, Equipment and willingness to Train - and seek individuals that take accountability and deliver results being Humble, Hungry to succeed, and Hunting for opportunities to win. We train our team to engage with each other by modulating between their intellect (iQ) and emotional intelligence (eQ) applying Facts, Finesse, and Force when they communicate. Job Purpose

Canoo is looking for a Senior Battery Controls developer with solid experience in controls and calibration of battery systems and related topics, ideally with some automotive experience. In this position, you will be responsible for developing battery state estimation and control algorithms for next-generation battery management systems as part of a well-rounded team at an innovative, fast-paced automotive company. This position will work cross-functionally and interact with several teams, including the battery cell, thermal, design, software, hardware, and vehicle controls teams.

Responsibilities (80s of the Position)

Design, develop, and validate various BMS control and state estimation algorithms including SOC, SOH, SOT, SOE, Power Prediction, and Fast Charge Controls. Develop battery models using electrical and physics-based modeling approaches. Develop high-quality firmware for battery management systems. Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis efforts to identify and resolve algorithm-related issues and implement corrective actions to improve system performance and reliability. Specify and develop the requirements related to the BMS controller. Document the algorithm development and testing results, and integrate the documentation withinthe relevant tools. Provide guidance on advanced technical topics related to battery controls. Develop and/or improve validation plans for the evaluation of battery controls software. Validate algorithm function and performance through MIL/SIL/HIL testing and in-vehicle. Provide feedback and assistance to other systems requiring battery controls support like powertrain controls development, or traction inverter development. Interact with vendors, suppliers, and customers as needed.

Required Experience

Strong fundamental knowledge on lithium-ion battery chemistry, electrochemical and thermal processes, and aging mechanisms Basic knowledge of embedded C and capability of converting an algorithm in efficient C-code that is compliant with automotive (e.g., MISRA) and company standards. Familiarity with common development stages and tools like model in the loop (MIL), software in the loop (SIL), hardware in the loop (HIL), and full system level testing.

Preferred Experience

3 years of work experience after a PhD, or 5 years after a Masters, related to battery algorithm controls and requirement specification for battery management systems. Strong knowledge of lithium-ion battery cell (LFP, NCA, and NMC) and pack design technologies. Experience modeling lithium-ion batteries with equivalent-circuit and physics-based methods. Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, and similar tools for battery equivalent-circuit and physics-based modeling. Theoretical expertise in probability and statistics Strong knowledge of battery cell testing techniques including GITT, HPPC, and EIS Knowledge of digital observer and filter design and implementation. Solid theoretical foundation in adaptive filtering, digital signal processing, and control theory including classical, state-space, optimal, and digital controls.
