Senior Battery Scientist

Role Summary/Purpose 
The Senior Battery Scientist will assist in the development of battery models, simulation tools, forecasting methods, and performance monitoring and analytics capabilities for lithium-ion based energy storage systems. The role will be an integral part of the Software Engineering and Data Science team in a Research and Development role, working to accelerate the development of our software capabilities while supporting customer facing product development and simulation efforts. Day to day activities will include algorithm development, sales engineering support, supply agreement support, product design support, and other business needs. 


Essential Responsibilities 
•    Develop electrical and physical models of lithium-ion batteries. 
•    Develop statistical models to predict and monitor energy storage system performance. 
•    Apply lab-based learnings to field data for prognostic recommendations and problem identification. 
•    Implement, test, and validate models with field data. 
•    Report and monitor on-going lab testing. 
•    Write documentation on algorithm and model improvements to clearly communicate the structure of new methods and implementations, including justification. 
•    Build software products and algorithms to estimate state of charge (SoC), SoC Imbalance, SoH, Useable Energy, Round trip efficiency, and other plant level performance metrics, including collaboration with product and engineering teams.

•    The candidate must be able to embrace the fast and dynamic environment of a growth stage company, comfortable with adjusting quickly to changing priorities. 

 

Qualifications/Requirements 
•    M.S. or Ph.D. in battery chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, or related sciences. 
•    Research related to and experience with lithium-ion batteries. 
•    Experience with numerical methods including differential and partial differential equation solvers. 
•    Expertise in statistical analytics including regressions and machine learning techniques 
•    Proficiency in Python as a programming language (3+ years) 
•    Track record of a career trajectory towards and in software engineering 
•    Knowledge of lithium-ion battery simulation techniques or electrical power systems engineering 
 
Desired Characteristics 

•    A PhD thesis centered around Battery end of life modeling. 
•    Deeply understanding of LFP batteries
•    An academic concentration on renewable energy.  
•    Work or academic experience in the energy industry.  
•    Prior experience with production systems running advanced statistical algorithms and machine learning 
•    Experience with open-source analytic and data munging software. 
•    Familiar with large, distributed datasets for high-speed computing. 
•    Strong leadership record with active participation in renewable energy associations, forums, clubs, or groups.
