Provide civil and structural engineering expertise to support operations, maintenance, and capital improvements at NYPA plants and facilities. Major practice areas include structural analysis and design, building engineering, bridge engineering, dam engineering, geotechnical engineering, transmission engineering, pipe and equipment support design, and general civil engineering (storm water management systems, water supply, sanitary sewers, etc.). Specific skill requirements will depend on the practice area for which expertise is needed in the department.
Responsibilities Develop and review calculations and designs to ensure compliance with applicable codes and accepted design practice. Develop drawings, details, calculations, specifications, and technical reports of highest technical quality to facilitate the successful construction and implementation of projects. Perform field inspections and conditions assessment of facilities. Complete a multi-aspect or multi-phase project. Responsible for completion of tasks on schedule, and that work is planned, executed and checked in a cost-effective manner. Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams to complete projects of moderate complexity. Review technical documents prepared by the team and complete check of design assumptions, calculations, criteria, load cases, code review and compliance with design standards. Prepare scopes of work and requests for proposals for outside consultants. Direct and review work of consultants. Evaluate and recommend selection of vendors, consultants and contractors through the appropriate contract administration procedures as needed. Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary for developing technical reports, writing critiques on technical documents and preparing technical procedures. Ability to coordinate project deliverables with needs of internal and external stakeholders, and regulatory agencies. Ability to manage and coordinate the work of consultants and other technical experts. Understanding of how governmental agency interacts with outside organizations, agencies and contractors. Knowledge of various current laws and regulations and how they affect or can be applied to NYPA, and industry-wide policies and practices. Ability to conceptualize problems, develop and layout construction plans, sections and details for original designs, repairs, retrofits and modifications to structures. Education, Experience and Certifications Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. New York State P.E. License required, or P.E. License from another state with the expectation of receiving New York State endorsement within12 months of start date. Minimum 10 years of experience in civil/structural engineering and design, preferably in utility industry. Physical Requirements Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State. Ability to access all areas of the plant and conduct physical evaluations of grounds and equipment including ability to climb and work at high elevations and in confined spaces, walk a significant distance, sometimes on uneven ground, and perform occasional minor lifting.
The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is: $122,900- $193,580. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
