The City of Lenexa is currently accepting applications for a Senior Community Standards Officer to join our team. This is a non-exempt, full time position working 30-hours weekly.

Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Senior Community Standards Officer enforces City codes including, but not limited to, property maintenance, building codes, rental licensing and massage establishments. Work is performed in residential neighborhoods, apartment complexes and commercial areas as necessary in response to complaints, building permit follow-up and proactive inspections to ensure compliance.
Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities
+ Conducts daily field inspections to investigate complaints and perform proactive inspections. Contacting residents and business owners is essential.
+ Tracks all inspection details, photos, conversations, etc. related to the inspection through the provided software.
+ Reviews expired building permits - contacts party, performs limited inspections, preparing Notice of Violation and Notice to Appear when necessary.
+ Completes biennial exterior and limited interior rental inspections of multi-family properties, often in coordination with the Fire Department.
+ Conducts inspections of hotels in coordination with the Fire Department.
+ Handles incoming phone calls, emails and service request concerns related to code cases.
+ Manages property maintenance and complex building code cases through prosecution in partnership with the Legal Department.
+ Prepares Notices of Violation and Notices to Appear for code violations.
+ Issues abatement work orders when necessary and completes all required follow-up inspections.
+ May perform massage establishment inspections in accordance with City code.
+ Drives City and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions of position.
Qualifications
Minimum: High school diploma or G.E.D.; four years of prior experience in code enforcement, building codes, law enforcement or a closely related public contact position; or equivalent experience, education or training. Experience in a court setting desired. Must possess and maintain a valid driver-s license. Must complete required NIMS IS-100 and IS-700 training within three months of employment.
Desired: Associate degree in environmental science, human services, law enforcement or related field. ICC Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector or ICC Residential Building Inspector.
Environment and Physical Factors
This position requires working outside in extreme temperatures and potentially hazardous environments such as abandoned buildings or new construction. This position requires the ability to walk/climb over difficult and uneven terrain to make inspections; the ability to lift objects weighing up to approximately 10 lbs. from the floor to the waist; the ability to ascend and descend stairs; and visual acuity to inspect projects.
Compensation and Benefits
Hiring range is from $24.64 to $28.56 dependent on qualifications and directly related experience. The City of Lenexa offers a comprehensive benefits package including:
