Senior Controls Engineer

Join their team in providing leadership in the Controls Engineering Department, leading and overseeing the controls portion of projects, including PLC, HMI, and robotic automation designs. Develop/implement procedures and standards for the controls engineering department to assist in meeting delivery timelines, improving quality, and maintaining budgets.

Responsibilities / Essential Functions:

Attain and maintain system expertise to design and execute machine controls and develop new robotic opportunities that best benefit our customers. Conduct pFMEAs (Process Failure Mode Effects Analysis) and Risk Assessments as needed. Lead and assist in equipment start-up and commissioning, coordinating with suppliers and contractors to achieve automation objectives and goals. Develop simulation and testing programs for automation systems where required to demonstrate the benefits of newly developed capabilities. Test, maintain, and modify existing automation systems as necessary. Program various industrial robots and cobots such as Fanuc, Kuka, Yaskawa, etc. Program Rockwell PLCs and HMIs, with a working knowledge of other platforms such as Siemens, Automation Direct, Schneider, Mitsubishi, Omron, etc. Program motion systems utilizing AC Drives and Servo Drives. Collaborate with customers and internal teams (mechanical engineers, purchasing, management, and others) to design and provide new and replacement automation equipment. Apply Lean Manufacturing Practices and Procedures in the implementation of new projects. Conduct and instruct maintenance personnel, engineers, and operators in new processes and procedures for automated equipment. Write instruction and training documentation for customer systems. Develop strong project plans to accomplish projects on time and within cost constraints, demonstrating leadership skills. Understand and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and quality standards (OSHA, RIA, NFPA 70E, NFPA 79, NEC, ISO 13849-1; EN 954-1). Mentor and assist associate controls engineers and technical staff in automation methods and programming.

Qualifications:

A minimum of an associate's degree (A.A./A.S.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, with at least three years of related experience, is preferred. Proven track record in leading projects and developing new automation for machines and processes, with the ability to provide detailed documentation upon project completion. Knowledge of PLC logic and practical experience in programming PLCs, including but not limited to Rockwell (Allen Bradley) and Siemens. Experience with HMI or SCADA programming is desirable. Experience reading and red-lining PI&D (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) drawings. Expertise in working with computers and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other MS Office software.

Work Environment:

Most work is performed in an office and shop environment. Regular trips to client facilities and/or manufacturing plants may be required based on project responsibilities. Travel up to 30% will be required, along with the flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays to support client needs during projects, including project meetings, installations, commissioning, shutdowns, and/or scheduled maintenance.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move between standing and sitting. The employee frequently needs to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, including pushing and pulling; and communicate verbally and audibly to ensure safety procedures are followed. The employee must frequently lift or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
