The Opportunity

This position works out of our locations either in Abbott Park, North Chicago or Willis Towers, Chicago.


As the Sr. Counsel, Global Privacy and Cybersecurity, you’ll be responsible for counseling various Abbott businesses in medical devices and diagnostics space on data, privacy, cybersecurity and AI laws and regulations.

 CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Work closely with cross-functional teams and advise clients across Abbott’s diverse businesses on a range of complex legal matters, including new product developments, data use practices, marketing programs, and internal investigations.Resolve novel and complex privacy, data, cyber, and AI legal questions with minimal supervision. Develop strategies and drive leadership alignment to address these challenges effectively.Stay updated on the latest changes in data, AI, privacy and cybersecurity laws and regulations, particularly in the medical devices and healthcare sectors. Evaluate the impact of US State and Federal privacy laws, GDPR, and other global privacy laws on Abbott’s operations and provide actionable insights to strengthen Abbott’s Global Privacy Program.Collaborate with Government Affairs, Cybersecurity, and Global Privacy functions to influence regulatory changes.Represent Abbott in industry association meetings, aligning with stakeholders on relevant issues. Engage in external influencing efforts to shape emerging laws and regulations.Select and manage outside counsel, define project objectives, and ensure that strategies and costs meet Abbott’s expectations. Conduct legal due diligence for potential M&A and other business transactions.Provide training and education to compliance and legal division employees on privacy and cybersecurity laws and regulations.Supervise a Paralegal, guiding their work and professional development.


TRAINING/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school, demonstrate a strong academic background, be admitted to a US state bar in good standing, have or be able to obtain appropriate licensure to practice law8+ years of legal experience in a law firm or corporate legal environmentExperience successfully representing and managing the legal affairs of a business having international operationsMust be able to move easily between a hands-on, operations-focused view and a strategic outlookKnowledge and experience working across different culturesExperience handling privacy and cybersecurity legal risks and mitigations in medical devices or healthcare industry preferredCIPP accreditations preferred but not essential

The base pay for this position is $143,300.00 – $286,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
