Position Summary

IPG Mediabrands seeks a talented, business-oriented attorney to join its legal team in New York to support Mediabrands Worldwide and its agencies. The position requires in-depth knowledge of issues affecting the development and implementation of marketing and media solutions including digital and experiential campaigns, social media and traditional media planning and buying.

The attorney hired for this position will primarily interact with business teams within Mediabrands, its affiliated agencies, and their clients. Collaboration with IPG’s corporate legal team and outside counsel will also be expected. The position requires a strong focus on commercial transactions and a demonstrated ability to draft and negotiate a high volume of agreements related to media buying, digital marketing, and custom content integration. The role provides legal support for agency teams in developing and producing traditional and digital advertising materials, including video vignettes, social media posts, editorial, event sponsorships, and experiential programming.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, fluid, high-performing environment and should have a solid background in advertising law or marketing compliance. This includes experience in negotiating contracts with clients and vendors, handling media buying agreements, and providing legal counsel across emerging technologies and global business practices. The role requires an individual who can work independently, but also effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams to address complex legal issues.

 

Essential Functions Media & Marketing Legal Counsel: Provide counsel regarding the planning, buying, creation, and activation of traditional, mobile, social, and digital media, as well as the execution of digital marketing, experiential planning, and custom content programs. Contract Negotiation & Drafting: Negotiate and draft a wide variety of agreements, including client and supplier agreements, media placement and sponsorship contracts, technology services agreements, data/intellectual property licenses, and data processing agreements. Advertising Law & Compliance: Provide ongoing legal counsel concerning marketing in traditional and new media, covering advertising law, privacy and publicity rights, user-generated content, social media, brand integration, and media/marketing campaign tracking and measurement. Privacy & Data Management: Collaborate closely with privacy counsel on online behavioral advertising and data management issues related to media and marketing offerings. Lead negotiations for data protection agreements. Legal Guidance & Education: Advise and counsel management on legal issues that impact business decisions and provide legal education to business teams. Offer periodic training on key legal issues affecting operations. Process Standardization: Standardize templates, processes, and legal guidance where possible to improve efficiency and consistency of legal services to business units. Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with departments including sales, marketing, and finance to ensure compliance with legal requirements and advise on risk. Travel & Flexibility: Occasional travel (primarily in the U.S.) will be required. The role demands flexibility to work across various New York City-based IPG and Mediabrands agency offices as needed.

 

Qualifications Education: JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school. Experience: 5+ years of relevant experience in advertising, media, or marketing law, preferably in an agency, advertising/marketing compliance department, or law firm servicing such businesses. Bar Admission: Admitted to practice and in good standing in New York (or, if admitted in another state, able to qualify promptly for In-House Counsel Registration in New York). Skills: Exceptional writing, oral communication, analytical, and organizational skills. Proven experience in contract negotiation and drafting, including social media-related agreements and production-related services contracts. Knowledge of advertising laws and regulations, particularly those governing Native Advertising, Endorsements, and Testimonials. Proven ability to provide strategic legal advice to senior management with excellent business judgment. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Familiarity with emerging technologies and global business practices. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other legal and advertising industry software.

The salary range for this position is posted below.  Where an employee or prospective employee is paid within this range will depend on, among other factors, actual ranges for current/former employees in the subject position, market considerations, budgetary considerations, tenure and standing with the Company (applicable to current employees), as well as the employee’s/applicant’s skill set, level of experience, and qualifications.
