Senior Cytotechnologist

Evaluates all cytology specimens accurately and renders a preliminary diagnosis.  Assists the pathologists in fine needle aspirations.  Assumes responsibility for quality control, instrument maintenance, and safety of work area.  Performs preparation work as necessary.          Performs molecular testing

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S):

Must be licensed as a Cytotechnologist by the New York State Education Department. Associate Degree in Cytotechnology or related science field required. In lieu of required degree, equivalent experience may be considered. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Must meet NYS Department of Health qualifications for Cytotechnologist as stated in Public Health Law Part 58.1-1.5.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

Performs screening of cytology cases. Renders accurate and efficient preliminary diagnosis.  Assumes the responsibility of reviewing previous cases and final reports according to established protocol. Screens the entire slide on all specimens. Performs molecular testing. Performs and documents all quality control documents. QC documents are accurate and complete 100% of the time. Ensures that the identification of slides is correct 100% of the time by checking the slides and requisition forms. Maintain a working supply of standards, controls, reagents and other materials necessary for the proper function of the department. Supplies are adequate to produce lab results as requested by customers. Notifies supervisor when supplies are needed. Maintain and update his/her knowledge of laboratory medicine as well as hospital policies, procedures and guidelines. Attends continuing education programs throughout the year. Attends hospital educational opportunities. Assists department supervisor in various clerical and new employee orientation duties as well as other non-specified tasks. Report to supervisor any equipment problems Follows section guidelines regarding signing out the negative gynecological smears. Renders a preliminary diagnosis before submitting case to pathologists. Works closely with pathologist on diagnosis of cases. Organizes work to ensure turnaround times are met. Turnaround times are met 90% of the time.  Assists in radiology guided aspirations and superficial aspirations. Ensures that the aspiration cart is ready in advance of the final call for radiology guided FNA. Pages or informs the pathologist regarding FNA procedure. Labels the slides, smears the aspirated material, stains and coverslips the slides for the pathologist to do the microscopic evaluation. Assumes the responsibility of cytology specimen processing as necessary. Willingly performs preparation work as needed to make work flow through the department. Performs other duties as assigned. Maintains Competency per department specific plans. Demonstrates competency on periodic competency assessments.  Seeks additional training to insure competency. Participates in Cytotechnology Proficiency Test Programs, acceptable survey scores are obtained. Reports results using lab computer system. Accurately uses LIS to provide results for Pathologist review. Ability to work independently with minimal direction. Assists with section QA program. Works with Pathologist and supervisor as needed. Adheres to hospital policies and procedures related to mandatory education, Annual health assessment, licensure verification. Able to troubleshoot problems effectively. Able to serve the needs of patients ages neonatal to geriatric. Able to deal with all types of customers and coworkers in a pleasant, professional manner. Must possess excellent organizational skills and a strong ability to multitask.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 The position is located indoors under normal working conditions.  Should be able to push/pull 25 lb., lift/move 15 lb. from floor to table, be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a key board, writing and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers.  Mobility requirements may include the ability to sit at a computer terminal or work station for a prolonged period of time in addition to being able to squat, stand and walk for a reasonable length of time and distance.

Salary Range:  $29.44-44.16     /hour                   Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
