Senior Data Scientist RESEARCH DATA SPECIALIST II $7,417.00 - $9,283.00 per Month Final Filing Date: 2/17/2025 Job Description and Duties Position may be extended or become permanent. Under the general direction of the Chief Economist and the Senior Policy Advisor in the Division of Petroleum Market Oversight (DPMO), the incumbent serves as a prime resource for data analysis, collection, management, and visualization, focusing on data and analysis of petroleum markets, regulation of transportation fuels, and decarbonization policy. The incumbent works independently to conduct complex research and data analysis using statistical and business intelligence software. Analytical tasks involve (a) the development of innovative or undefined methods for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data, (b) identifying new strategies or sources for collecting data, (c) data cleaning, management, and analysis, and (d) development of of impactful data visualizations. As a subject matter expert, the incumbent makes recommendations for potential improvements to products or processes that support the overall analytical needs and strategy for DPMO and the CEC. The outcomes are used to advise the Director of DPMO and other state leaders concerning transportation fuel markets and California’s ongoing transition to renewable energy sources. In this position, you will conduct complex data analysis as part of DPMO’s transportation fuels market analysis utilizing statistical and data management software to query, validate, format, visualize and organize structured and unstructured data. You will be responsible for coordinating complex research projects with the DPMO investigations and economics staff. You may be asked to develop data models and visualizations and communicate findings in dashboards, memos, slide decks, and Division reports. Senior CEC management will rely on the Senior Data Scientist as a prime resource and innovator in data analysis of transportation fuels and energy economics and policy.
