Senior Development Manager - Observability

About the teamThe Developer Experience (DevEx) Observability team is responsible for the design, development, maintenance and operation of the systems and tools that enable all Zillow Group engineers to supervise service health and respond to service degradation! Our team is at the forefront of embracing new technologies and processes which create company wide standards for Observability. It is a broad area of ownership that has a critical impact on the quality and efficiency of all services at Zillow Group.

About the role

As the Senior Engineering Manager of the DevEx Observability team, you will have a key role in helping Zillow Group design and build cross company platforms, so we can transform developer experience for our engineers! You will lead the Observability strategy for the company, working with customers, Product managers, and engineering executive leadership to set the multi-year observability strategy for Zillow Group.

You will be responsible for the design, build, and maintenance of critically important observability platforms and tools. You will supervise troubleshooting and resolution of problems with third party and custom build software. You will mentor engineers on your team, and managers within your organization, helping set the direction for how we build and evolve our platforms.

As a Senior Development Manager, you will:

Lead and manage the observability team, ensuring the right tool mix for effective monitoring, logging, and tracing across all systems.

Mentor and develop team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Oversee the implementation and maintenance of both third-party and custom in-house observability platforms.

Collaborate with other engineering teams to define and implement observability practices and standards.

Drive the development and enhancement of observability tools and processes to improve system reliability and performance.

Ensure the observability infrastructure is scalable, resilient, and secure.

Monitor and analyze system performance metrics, identifying and resolving issues proactively.

Work closely with product and engineering leadership to align observability initiatives with business goals.

Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in observability and apply them to improve the team's capabilities.

Develop and maintain documentation for observability processes, tools, and best practices.

Manage relationships with third-party vendors and ensure the effective integration of their tools and services.

Provide regular updates and reports to senior management on the status and performance of observability initiatives.

Lead incident response efforts, ensuring timely and effective resolution of system issues.

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.

In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $197,100.00 - $314,900.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC and may not be applicable to other locations.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.

Who you are

8+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3 years in a management role.

Strong understanding of monitoring, logging, and tracing concepts and best practices.

Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and their observability solutions.

Proven experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, DataDog, and Splunk.

Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience in leading cross-functional teams.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools, including CI/CD pipelines.

Experience with both third-party and custom in-house observability platforms.
