Job Summary
The Senior Director, Manufacturing Operations will lead a diverse team of senior leaders focused on launching various products into production as well as managing R&D and sustaining activities for a large volume of existing products from initial ramp through end of life. They will directly manage the Product, Test, and Back-end Manufacturing departments, including a 24/7 on-site manufacturing facility. The product mix will span RF products (SW, LNA, PA, DSA, Phase shifter), Automotive, Power, Sensor, and IOT. The Senior Director leads teams responsible for supporting very high-volume prototype sample requirements, BOM validation, test development, product characterization and qualification, wafer bumping, probing, assembly, and DPS processes, while driving product performance and specification negotiations to ensure low cost and high quality in HVM. This position will directly interface with Marketing, Design, Reliability, Quality, and Characterization engineering and will report to the Vice President of Operations.
Roles & Responsibilities
This position has responsibility for:
Effective leadership to establish and promote a vision for the team that’s aligned with the company’s strategy and best interests while delivering product on time with best-in-class quality and cost. Provide direct and indirect management of Back-end Manufacturing, Product and Test Engineers and Managers responsible for NPI and HVM at both local facilities and APAC-based OSAT manufacturing locations. Work with Supply Chain, Technology and Design Engineering, and OSATs to optimize test coverage, cost, capacity, and back-end manufacturing strategies and define long-term roadmaps aligned with technology roadmaps as well as supplier and OSAT roadmaps and capabilities. Manage teams responsible for developing new technologies with the latest equipment and manufacturing methods while ensuring all development requirements are met, determining risk levels associated with any technical or commercial trade-offs. Manage local R&D and NPI activities focused on delivering high-quality, low-cost products with fast cycle times to provide the company with competitive advantages. Set an effective and scalable organizational structure and define clear roles and responsibilities for the group, manage workloads and career development, and set clear direction for assigned projects. Establish and maintain culture of accountability, quality, and attention to detail to help reduce quality escalations and risk of non-conforming, excess, or obsolete inventory. Participate in the product life cycle planning through interactions with marketing, design, product development, manufacturing, and quality organizations. Manage teams responsible for cost reduction and sustaining products in HVM. Sustaining activities may include yield enhancement, test time reduction, CARs and related 8D investigations, low yield disposition, change control, and new supplier and other post-ramp qualifications. Ensure team follows necessary change control protocols when product changes occur after production release. For example: qualifying new fabs, new package vendor, new test platform, new manufacturing facility, or design changes to improve yield or performance. Participate with cross functional teams and take ownership for product development and lifecycle processes and methodologies and drive continuous, systematic improvements. Build a network based on trust and mutual respect with key Murata counterparts, as well as both inside and outside the company, which can be used for problem solving, alignment, continuous improvement projects, and generally support the mission of the team.

Minimum Qualifications (Experience and Skills)
15 years of experience in Manufacturing, Product, Test Engineering with focus on RF, analog, and mixed-signal product lines. 10 years in senior management roles leading teams responsible for new product development and sustaining products in mass production. Direct engineering experience and comprehensive understanding of bumping, DPS, and packaged part assembly processes and related equipment sets and supplier bases. Experience managing a 24/7 on-site manufacturing operations facility for Probe and DPS functions and the related R&D and support activities and teams (S&R, Maintenance, Production Planning). Strong understanding of the wafer fabrication process and potential impacts to back-end manufacturing steps (e.g. Bump, Test, DPS, Assembly). Emotionally intelligent leader with the soft skills needed to build and maintain positive relationships with customers, suppliers, stakeholders, and non-technical support functions, such as HR, IT, and Finance, in order to put the team in the best position to succeed. Experience with common IC development related activities such as: Design, Characterization, Test, and Reliability. Creative and out-spoken advocate for quality of results, refinement and simplification of complex workflows, and automation of key processes. Strong technical writing and communication skills; Team player with a strong sense of urgency to meet product requirements on schedule. Ability to clearly assess and manage risk, be decisive, remove roadblocks, and empower teams. Strong cross-functional team building, leadership, and problem-solving skills. This position is based in San Diego, CA but requires frequent travel to APAC visiting Murata and various OSAT facilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to work across various geographical regions and diverse cultures; experience with Japanese business culture highly desired.
Education Requirements
BSEE required; MSEE or MBA preferred.
