What you will be doing

We are seeking a Senior Director of Product Management to lead a team focused on generating innovative insights across trade promotions and associate retention. This role will oversee the Trade Promotions Manager, Associate Retention Manager, and two data interns, guiding their efforts with a strong focus on data-driven insights.

This role demands a deep understanding of retail merchandising, including trade area analysis, CPI trends, and trade allowance management, with proficiency in merchandising systems and data-driven analysis. A key aspect of this position is strategic storytelling and the ability to succinctly present problem statements and solutions, emphasizing the "what" and "why" behind the product rather than just the "how" of execution.

The position will be based in Pleasanton, CA or Plano, TX.

Main responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership & Coaching: Provide guidance and daily coaching to the Trade Promotions Manager, Associate Retention Manager, and data interns, ensuring that their approach is grounded in strong data-driven insights. Cultivate an insights-driven mindset across the team, aligning efforts with strategic company goals.  Strategic Insight Development: Focus on high-level product management by guiding the team to generate, test, and validate hypotheses with innovative, data-driven insights. Initial responsibilities emphasize building and refining insights, with backlog development as a future consideration.  Strategic Storytelling & Presentation: Use advanced storytelling skills to present problem statements, insights, and proposed solutions clearly and concisely. Support the team in crafting narratives that communicate complex issues in simple, actionable terms for senior leadership and cross-functional teams.  Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with merchandising, HR, real estate and store operations to validate insights, drive alignment, and gain buy-in for strategic recommendations across teams.  Trade Area and CPI Analysis: Leverage expertise in trade area dynamics, Consumer Price Index (CPI) trends, and trade allowance management to guide and enhance insights and strategic recommendations for the team.  Tool & System Knowledge: Exposure to merchandising systems (item management, pricing, promotions, allowances, billing) and HR systems (labor scheduling, onboarding). Candidates with extensive experience in merchandising systems will be prioritized, especially those with backgrounds from companies like Albertsons or similar.  Data-Driven Innovation: Lead the team in developing fresh, strategic recommendations from data insights, focusing on creating hypotheses that push beyond traditional solutions and provide actionable insights.  Collaboration with VP: Work closely with the VP, providing strategic input and receiving guidance to tackle trade promotion and associate retention challenges through a data-driven lens.

The salary range is $218,900 to $ $297,380 annually. Starting salary will vary based on criteria such as location, experience, and qualifications. There may be flexibility for exceptional candidates.

What we are searching for

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business, Data Science, Retail Management, or a related field.  Extensive product management experience in retail or grocery, with deep knowledge in trade area analysis, CPI trends, and trade allowance management.  Proven ability to lead and coach a team, fostering a culture rooted in data-driven insights.  Strong expertise in merchandising tools (item management, promotions, pricing, allowance, billing) and familiarity with HR systems (labor scheduling, onboarding). Preference for candidates with experience in merchandising systems, particularly from large retailers.  Demonstrated ability to translate data-driven insights into strategic actions, with a strong focus on hypothesis testing and validation.  Excellent communication skills with the capacity to influence stakeholders through strategic storytelling and succinct presentations.

Preferred Skills:

Familiarity with industry tools and systems used in grocery or retail for merchandising and HR processes.  Strong strategic mindset with a focus on insights-driven product management aimed at long-term impact rather than immediate backlog execution.  Experience collaborating with data science teams to extract insights and drive strategic decisions.
