Senior Director - Diagnostic Laboratory Operations & Project Management

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location.  The anticipated wage for this position is

$151,500 - $222,200

The Eli Lilly Clinical Diagnostics Laboratory (ELCDL) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Eli Lilly and Co. ELCDL offers clinical diagnostic testing and supports portfolio-driven assay development to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic and rare diseases. Scientists in the ELCDL develop, validate, implement, and perform testing to support the overall lab strategy as well as Eli Lilly corporate portfolio objectives. The lab also actively engages in clinical utility evidence generation and external engagement with key partners, for the goal of advancement of novel diagnostics in medical practice.

The Director/Senior Director, Diagnostics Laboratory Operations and Project Management, will be responsible for broad oversight of laboratory business operations including the laboratory project portfolio, making sure that laboratory deliverables are achieved in a prompt, organized, and accurate fashion based on robust project management and coordination between lab teams. The laboratory’s testing service project portfolio includes testing for investigator-initiated research, collaborative research with internal and external partners, and support of Lilly sponsored-endeavors including clinical trials and observational studies. Other lab projects outside of testing services may include engagement in external conferences and specific business collaborations.

The role requires cross-functional expertise, basic laboratory knowledge, demonstrated ability to manage timelines and strategic resourcing, demonstrated capability to develop and drive implementation of new processes, and the ability to obtain alignment within teams, across functions, and partners regarding testing and project deliverables.  In addition to implementation of lab-specific strategies, the Director/Senior Director may also support routine laboratory operations and lab quality by helping to maintain a robust lab infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsible for project management across the laboratory, including but not limited to research projects and clinical trial projects needing lab testing support.Develop, harmonize, and integrate dashboards, timelines, checklists, and other key project management tools to ensure prompt completion of deliverables and lab objectives.Strategically consider resource assignment and make recommendations for optimal resourcing for prompt project completion.Understand and prioritize checklists for individual projects in relation to the lab’s overall project portfolio. For projects requiring testing services, checklists may include requirements for sample testing, quality oversight, regulatory agencies, and data transfer. For external collaborations, checklists may also include statements of work, contracting, and other business transaction needs.Continually assess project management tools for process efficiency and improvement; ability to manage projects without overengineering of processes.Responsible for project management related to specific business collaborations or other external engagement ventures, when needed.Will ultimately manage direct reports as the lab project portfolio expands.If needed, may assume budgeting and fiscal responsibilities based on experience.

Other specific duties:

Facilitate lab and external teams in the implementation and documentation of workflows for laboratory deliverables, including contracting, budgeting, statements of work, material transfer agreements, sample requirement templates, and data transfer agreementsPoint of contact for external teams, for communication to/from the lab regarding testing services, collaboration, or business documentation needs.Communicating changes in project scope, timeline, or budget to key partners.Ensure that the lab team and key partners understand key project risks. Drive risk management processes to ensure appropriate plans and actions are secured. Respond to internal and external inquiries in a prompt and professional manner.Oversee and at times directly provide logistical support of departmental, asset-specific, and/or cross-functional meetings, including but not limited to preparation of meeting agendas, meeting minutes, slides, and summaries.Lead through shared learning and process improvement. Ability to look ahead and anticipate and resolve operational and business problems that may impact projects and function.Respect and leverage others’ expertise and work experience in a way that encourages learning, collaboration, innovation, and commitment to a common objective.

Required qualifications:

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, preferably in a science-related health field. At least 7 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry or healthcare administration, including 3 years of CAP/CLIA laboratory administration or management

Ideal candidate will also have:

Demonstrated project and portfolio management skills (e.g., management of integration, scope, time, cost, quality, and communications)Masters in Business Administration degreeBasic understanding of contracting processes with vendors and external partners.Experience working in a heavily matrixed organization and ability to work effectively with all levels in the organization.Able to effectively facilitate team meetings and drive effective and efficient team decision-making.Good learning agility and flexibility to adjust quickly and effectively to changing business priorities and needs; able to adjust priorities as needed.Strong self-management and organizational skills; able to independently manage workload.Strong oral and written communication skills; must be able to communicate clearly with team members and leadership.Strong interpersonal and teambuilding skills; able to develop effective teamwork between team members with diverse styles.Adept at Microsoft Office and Smartsheet. Ability to build new tools/dashboards with little oversight.
