Senior Editor/Executive Editor, Crown (Hybrid)

The Crown imprint of Penguin Random House seeks a Senior or Executive Editor to join its nonfiction team. Reporting to the Publisher, the editor will solicit, acquire, develop, and edit works of nonfiction across a wide range of categories, including practical advice and self-help, science, memoir, pop culture, and current events.

This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA). Minimum two days a week in office is required.

 

Responsibilities: 

Acquires and develops 8-10 new book projects annually.  Assesses potential value of submissions, researches comps, and runs P&L scenarios.  Directly participates in auctions and negotiates deal points. Works with authors on drafts, outlines, and revisions of manuscripts, including structural and line edits.  Consults with the art, production, and managing editorial departments on schedule, design, and packaging of books.  Collaborates with the publicity, marketing, and sales teams to position titles in the marketplace  Develops and maintains author, agent, and publisher contacts and engages in developmental work with authors.  Prepares title information sheets; writes and edits copy.  Keeps abreast of trends and competitive titles. 

 

Requirements: 

Minimum 5 years of book editorial experience to be considered for Senior Editor; Minimum 7 years of book editorial experience to be considered for Executive Editor Must have a solid track record of acquiring and shaping commercially successful books  Strong understanding of competition and the nonfiction marketplace  Strong line and conceptual editing skills Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills  Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to attend to detail  Strong contacts within writer and literary agent communities  Ability to work cross-functionally with other groups, companies, and organizations on shared projects  Ability to deliver timely, accurate work and demonstrate good follow up and follow through  Strong negotiation skills 

 

The salary range for the Senior Editor level is $81,500-$85,000, and $92,000-$130,000 for Executive Editor. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.   

 

Penguin Random House job postings include a good faith compensation range for each open position. The salary range listed is specific to each particular open position and takes into account various factors including the specifics of the individual role, and candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
