Senior Engineer, Package

At Revlon, we create beauty innovations for everyone that inspire confidence and ignite joy every day.

Breaking beauty boundaries is in our company’s DNA. Since its game-changing launch of the first opaque nail enamel in 1932 (and later, the first long-wear foundation), Revlon has provided consumers with high-quality product innovation, performance, and sophisticated glamour. Elizabeth Arden made waves as a woman-led beauty company in the 1920s. In 1931, Almay became the original hypoallergenic, fragrance-free beauty brand.

Today, Revlon resiliently continues its legacy as a leading global beauty company. Our diverse portfolio—which consists of some of the world’s most iconic brands and product offerings in color cosmetics, skin care, hair color & care, personal care, and fragrances—is sold around the world through prestige, professional, mass, and direct-to-consumer retail channels. These brands include Revlon, Revlon Professional, Elizabeth Arden, Almay, American Crew, CND, Cutex, Mitchum, Sinful Colors, Creme of Nature, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, John Varvatos, Juicy Couture, Ed Hardy and more.

We honor our heritage, embrace change, and applaud diversity. We champion our employees and celebrate our consumers.

We are Revlon, together, transforming beauty.

Basic Function:

Acting with minimal supervision, complete all technical deliverables for primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging in the assigned categories/brands/workstreams. Ensures his/her packaging meets Revlon criteria for customer performance, manufacturability and distribution within cost and delivery expectations.

Major Duties:

Engineers package components that are from stock, modified-stock, custom or novel designs. Performs analysis of mechanical fit and function of mating components. Corrects or modifies deficient designs on paper and in physical form to meet economic and functional requirements Carries out the scale-up of primary packaging from concept sketch through multicavity production tooling. Evaluates packaging materials for spec compliance. Carries-out/arranges functional testing and inspection using a variety of lab equipment. Analyzes inspection reports from suppliers, proposes drawing corrections and approves deviations. Makes on-site visits to suppliers when necessary. Uses engineering principles, statistical analysis, and competitor benchmarking to propose new criteria for when an appropriate specification doesn't exist, then gains alignment from cross functional partners and manager. Develops on-shelf variants and protective packaging to meet customer/regional needs. Adapts these constructions to fit the primary and work efficiently with localized manufacturing capabilities. Specifies all tertiary (conveyance) packaging to conform with customer/supply chain requirements so the product can be distributed economically with no damage. Interacts with plant operations teams to ensure the timely supply of adequate information for cost estimations, the ordering of change parts, machinery, and any other preparations necessary for new product introductions. Uses TOPS software to size chips/packers and shippers with an efficient pallet pattern. Harmonizes materials wherever possible. Validates tertiary drawings against physical samples, that have been transit tested successfully in current or like-as application. Initiates tertiary artwork and seeks approval from customer/marketing teams. Writes/modifies/approves all tertiary specifications in spec system and assembly instructions (RPPS) referencing the BOM's, and material specs. Requests and attends/leads line trials in-plant or at subcontractors. Acts on the outcomes from the trial fill to update BOM’s and RPPS, and to escalate deviations or cost issues. Conducts or delegates transit tests which may include laboratory vibration/drop or real-life round-trip shipment of simulated small parcels, case packs, or tote packs. Ensures all elements of the product can mate together and function properly within the given cost/delivery expectation. Inputs and maintains package logistics data estimates into brand information library BIL and final data into MDG/SAP. Attends all in house production start-up's for assigned projects. Travels to domestic/foreign corporate and third-party factories for validation of filled or assembled goods when required. Proposes new innovations for product/processes, develops the idea, and plans/executes the implementation. Makes 3d printed parts for new product prototyping, packaging edits, gages, and test fixtures. Generates cost savings by qualifying new sources of supply, by validating alternate materials or by product/process simplification. Attends all assigned category meetings without supervision acting as the technical packaging representative. Research trends and technological developments for cosmetic packaging that align with business objectives. Proposes new innovations for product/processes, develops the idea, and plans/executes the implementation. Assists manufacturing and quality departments in solving production problems related to packaging.

Knowledge & Skills Required:

Required knowledge and what is used in this role:

Knowledge of packaging for cosmetics, toiletries, and fragrance, such as bottles, closures, pumps, and tubes. Basic knowledge of common component materials and processes (limitations, specifications, uses, costs) Basic knowledge of packaging machinery and processes Familiarity with decorating techniques, Awareness of Purchasing and Quality Control procedures, namely statistical process control Proficiency with presentation software, spreadsheets, databases, and email systems Basic knowledge of distribution- customs, GTIN, inventory systems and transit methods

Desirable knowledge:

Proficiency with SAP usage, reporting and customization. Proficiency with engineering software such as Solidworks, Minitab, FEA and or moldflow. Fluency in a foreign language relative to supply-chain: Spanish, Mandarin, or German. Expertise with injection plastics.

Required Skills and examples of how they are demonstrated in this role:

Scientific experimentation:

Designs and manages multivariable experimental test plan under their own initiative to validate a hypothesis. Coordinates with one or more departments/individuals/sites to execute the test plan. Recommends new services or equipment necessary to carry out the test plan. Provides routine or custom reporting to management. Uses statistical techniques to draw conclusions based on results. Presents the experimental results in a way that is suitable for upper management delivery.

Problem solving

Gathers and properly organizes information of the issue. Collaborates with departments/individuals/sites in the root cause analysis. Proposes solutions to complex packaging, business system or organizational problems. Uses scientific experimentation to validate a solution when applicable. Prepares and presents information and recommendations to manager. Collaborates with other departments/individuals/sites to resolve the problem. Owns the problem resolution for all technical packaging deficiencies until it is rectified.

Communication:

Communicates technical concepts and data clearly and understandably to various levels of management. Persuades line-workers, coworkers, and managers to align with his/her proposals/requests. Provides frequent project/task updates to managers and cross functional partners, especially completion.

Project Management:

Executes 20-40 projects per year, simultaneously, that may phase-in and phase-out at different times. Organizes all digital and physical elements of a project reliably with consistency Commits daily to triage project tasks based on priority. Creates a new process instruction when there isn’t one

Leadership:

Mentors co-workers, temps, subordinates; educates and provides example that others want to follow Leads trial fill events by coordinating materials, schedule, and authorizing people and their roles in the event. Chairs cross functional meetings for projects and quality concerns. Takes ownership of a process problem or a day-to-day need in the engineering community. Steps up to solve a problem immediately when spotted Sets a vision for self-improvement and improvements for the group.

Analytical:

Evaluates components for function, fit and mechanical compatibility using tolerance stack-up analysis. Prepares charts and graphs for data that can be used to show a trend, probability, capability, or correlation. Uses trigonometry to calculate missing information on drawings and geometry to scale volume or mass. Interprets material data sheets to make predictions on suitability for use on a particular component

Minimum Education Required:

B.S. in Packaging, Mechanical, Industrial or Chemical Engineering

Minimum Years of Experience:

2-4 years required
